Study hours

Can anyone give me a rough estimate of how long they spend studying a week? I have heard that it is so time consuming you have no time for yourself as well as it is not that bad. Maybe list your major and hours you spend a week studying. Thanks

Search this board and you will find the answer.

EE, CS, physics, math and economics quintuple major. Spend roughly 80 hours/ week studying

I am currently a psychology major. I do not know exactly how much time I spend studying, but I have a part time job that I work about 20 hours a week and I also have an internship that ranges from 10 hours a week to 30 hours a week. I would say I probably spend about 20-30 hours a week studying. I still have time to go out on the weekends (when I’m not working) and do social things on occasion.

However, I used to be a Biotechnology major and then I switched to a Molecular and Microbiology major. I studied pretty much non stop. I would say I needed to spend about 20 hours outside of class (probably about 15 in some classes) studying each class so 20*4= 80 hours a week. Which was almost impossible for me to do since I worked. Chemistry never came easy to me so I was always spending lots of time on my chem classes. Psychology is now a joke for me compared to that degree program.

depends on the subject and how you are at it.

I have 3 courses right now. College writing 2, COllege algebra and Visual Basic 2.

I spend probably 2 hours a week on visual basic, because i love programming.
I spend probably 6 hours a week on College writing, well because nothing to learn in the course, but write!
College algebra i spend probably 40 hours a week on it and i am still barely passing

I don’t really study unless I have tests coming up, I just do homework if I have it and read if I feel like it. I’ll spend maybe 10 hours a week on average I guess. I study hardcore a few days before most tests though…then it’s more like 30-40 hours per week if I have multiple tests. I understand that’s not the best approach, but it works for me.

Good question.

I think studying is good and studying more is better. However, you need to keep an eye on your productivity. If your “studying” is actually skimming a textbook for five minutes then sitting on Facebook for an hour…don’t bother.

Edit:
For me, I used to actually study very little but I’ve been stepping things up significantly lately. Probably up to ~25 hours outside of class now, looking to go higher.

No idea. Definitely not enough. But I have very little free time.

I’m a French/Theatre double major.

I have class from 9-11 on Mondays, work from 12:30-2:30, and class from 2:30-3:45.
I have class from 9-12:15 on Tuesdays, work from 12:30-4:00, and class from 4:30-6:00.
On Wednesdays, I finally get a break from 11-2:30 where I don’t have work or class.
On Thursdays, my schedule is like Tuesday.
On Fridays, I have one class and then work until 5:00.

On top of that, I also have two Clubs in the evenings. And I’m soon about to start working on a Scottish play.

I probably spend about 10 hours a week on homework/studying, but even with that small amount, I rarely have time to just relax.

15 hours attending class, 15 hours doing homework, 10 hours studying. That’s how it usually breaks down for me.

I’m a History major, finishing up my gen eds. I spend ~10 or so hours a week studying, depending on what I have going on. If I weren’t determined to make another 4.0 this semester, I wouldn’t work as hard though. It kind of depends on what your goals are.

I am a Computer Science major and Japanese minor. Taking 20 credits.

I spend about 15 hours doing HW a week. (usually on Saturday and Sunday it’s like 3-6 hours each, or at least 9 hours total on weekends).
And for studying I think maybe 4-6 hours…? That’s only around 6 hours if I have a test… usually the studying somehow gets done through doing HW. I consider textbook readings and learning new vocabulary as HW as it’s assigned.

Somehow I have a 3.63 GPA (probably even higher this semester) so I guess it’s okay ^^
You guys seem to study/do HW a lot more than me, hmm…

As much as I need to. Depending on the week, usually between 10-20 hours. Sometimes I may go under 10 hours just because the material being covered is so ridiculously easy that I only need to look at it once. Again, it depends. I currently have a 3.73 it’s probably going to be a 3.75 or 3.88 by the time this semester is over because of my habits.

Per week, I study about three hours, do about fifteen to twenty hours of homework, read a book or two, and write between two and three thousand words in a story I’m working on. Spend about twenty hours on other things, and have about the same amount of time to hang out with people and do fun things.

…Not nearly enough. I usually go all out when a test is coming up, but my study time is lumped around due dates for assignments or exams. If I’m in between things, maybe an hour or two a day if I don’t have any reading to do. But that’s not counting the time I spend doing homework.

I’m a bio major so when I study for biology or organic chemistry, I typically just read over the notes (especially since my ochem professor is anti-chemistry books and doesn’t follow one. God, he’s a pain) a ton. I tend to not read my bio book because the level of detail and random tidbits of information distorts the knowledge essential to kicking butt on the exam.

I’m the opposite of most people I feel like… I think I study more than I need to. I’m a psychology major and probably spend 5-6 hours per night and maybe 2-3 hours each day on the weekend. Usually consisting of going over lecture slides/reading/rewriting notes/group study/attending office hours/doing assignments.
