study methods to cram for exams??

i have my 1st exam for my night class tonight, due to work commitments i wasnt able to do much studying other than reading over my notes. what are some effective wys that some of you use when studying for exams and have a short period of time? sometimes u can get away in essays or at least get by in multiple choice exams, but the worst are fill in/short answer ones. unfortunately this is a history class andthe teacher requires ID's w/ a brief 1-2 sentence description, dates, etc. tHe most annoying part is he give you 30 names/events, but only choses 10-15 on the exam. so basically I have 7-8 hrs to memorize all this stuff. some people do better cramming to keep the info fresh in their mind but others do better with repititiion and memorization the longer they have to study

flash cards, that way you constantly test yourself

research has shown that we tend to perform better when we don't know something by working alone and once we've begun to get it down well, we do best with other people--you might apply this (and I've seen it work quite well) by studying on your own at first and then, maybe an hr or 2 before the test, meeting with someone else to quiz each other as well as to simply bounce ideas off each other. I've found that goign through notes together and asking each other things you didn't understand helps to reinforce it in your own mind as well as the other peron's! Remember, you don't really know something 'til you've taught it to someone else!

I know this is way too late now, but next time, make sure you have a calendar of all your test dates so you can be ready wayyyyy in advance. Say for instance that you know you are going to be busy all next week and you have a test that same Friday, you should start studying now... Just make sure you keep an organized calendar of all your big academic things so that you are ready and nothing creeps up like it did tonight... I know its too late right now, but just for next time :)

One step at a time. As in, one small portion at a time. Quiz yourself over and over until you know that portion. Then go onto the next one and every once in a while quiz yourself over everything you went over. It makes things a lot less intimidating.

flash card doesn't really work for me.
i just write everything out and make my own notes from the notes and a shorter one from my own notes etc... so I get everything. well i guess it could be a little bit too time consuming, but it works for me;)
(even when I'm cramming..)
