"Study: One-Third Of Colleges, Universities In ‘Real Financial Trouble’" (CBS)

Study: One-Third Of Colleges, Universities In ‘Real Financial Trouble’ CBS Atlanta

Probably one third of churches are in real financial trouble, and one-third of families, and one-third of cities.

There are a large number of colleges and universities that have more outstanding debt than they have in their endowment. Everyone pays attention to the endowment, but few people look at the debt. Also, some universities put much of their endowment into high risk investments that they cannot easily liquidate. There are suspicions that some of these assets are not worth as much as is being claimed.

No surprise. Many colleges are public universities and community colleges, whose state government funding is being cut.

Here is the actual report:

Page 7 of the Bain report above in post #4 has a list of factors that could indicate financial problems for schools. It makes sense and could be something to consider when selecting a school- will it still be around/maintain quality over the time attended?
