""We had not anticipated gender differences but found that girls had a definite benefit of early medication only in mathematics, whereas boys showed marginal benefits in both mathematics and language arts. These differences could reflect random variability in our data but might also be consequent to real differences in the academic benefit," Dr. Zoega told Medscape Medical News."

Shrink wrap-- do you think this is due to the medication or the fact that the kids just didn’t have a chance to get so behind to begin with? Do they think the stimulants affect brain structure? Sorry to sound so " dumb" but I don’t know much about this but find anything to do with the brain fascinating.

Doesn’t sound dumb! I think there is a lot NOBODY knows about this subject. But this study seems to be saying it keeps them from getting so far behind.

I have an article from my friend Dr. Stephen Krashen sitting in my Inbox today that shows that having access to books in the school library and the community library has a positive impact on learning in the 4th and 7th grades, likely larger than those demonstrated for the stimulants.

Shrinkwrap and mini - I respect both of your opinions - would you be willing to look at my recent post under the “good grade pill” thread and share your views? Thank you

Nope. We homeschooled. All this stuff has to do with how kids “behave” (academically or otherwise) in the box. Take 'em out of the box and things change.

Thinking…will have to get back to you. Affordable care act , and specifically medicaid in California, is a plenty to chew on.

From the Good Grade Pill thread;

“That diagnosis, based on a full evaluation by a professional in the field, should precede any “trial” of stimulants, and I hope his doc doesn’t just prescribe them without it. That’s bad medicine.”

So…Five dollars a month for methylphenidate, or “full evaluation by a professional in the field”…hmmm…if only methylphenidate leveled the playing field…
