Study skills, or lack thereof.

For the past two AP Bio tests, I studied a good 6-7 hours over a period of 1 week....actually 10 hours for the first one.... and ended up getting 70 and 60, respectively. Pretty much everyone in the class studies at max. 2 hours or so.... some even less...and get 80's and 90's...... I don't know what's wrong with me and why I can't get a good grade for once.

Basically, my teacher says that the tests comes from the lecture outline which is 5 pages back and forth... a tedious homework packet which takes 3-4 hours to complete..... lab...and a few questions here and there from our thought questions..... now I study all of these things and yet bomb the test. What is up with that and what am I doing wrong?

I would recommend outlining everything you know that's going to be on the test. I know it sounds like all that stupid "learning psychology" stuff, but writing stuff down again helps A LOT. You don't really know everything that well if you only look at your book/lab reports/lecture notes and tell yourself that you know it.

Outlining helps me a lot for AP US History, and I sometimes even do it twice. This may sound like overkill, but the worst grade I've gotten on a test this year was a B+.

Unless your AP Bio teacher is testing you on stuff you haven't done, you're simply not getting the information into your brain. Hope my advice helps. =)

Maybe you just aren't a Bio person?

I have trouble passing Chem tests, and I study every night. It's just too hard for me to learn. Bio, on the other hand, came really easy to me. I never studied and got a 97 in the class.

I mean I'll admit that I'm not that smart....only above average in most areas....but I actually study (sometimes even hardcore) for these tests...and up until the test I feel like I have everything down...but when the tests are handed out...my mind goes blank...and on the fill in the blanks I can't seem to remember a lot of the terms that I actually had memorized and studied. Ehh, I dunno.

Then you just need to work on your test-taking techniques. Don't stress about tests, it definitely doesn't help your scores. Try not to think about it the day of. Tell yourself it's no big deal. When you choke on tests like that, then you panic and can't think straight. I doubt it's your study habits; work more on staying calm before/during tests.

maybe ....and since I have bio right after lunch....im always in the library during lunch studying

ahaha same here. except I give up after 30 minutes of studying and settle with a 70.

Can someone in a similar situation as I please describe in detail what you do, how you go on about studying, how much you study, when you study, etc.... What I have been doing has obviously not been working so I want to try new methods in the hope that one of them works.

for ap biology, there a ton of websites i use to help prepare for the tests.....we use campbell biology so i do a websearch for whatever chapter we are on, and because the campbell book is so widespread i end up finding at least a few good practice tests that i quiz myself on.

for instance we are on evolution (ch 22-26) right now and i found this website: http://bsc2011-01.su03.fsu.edu/Exam3MCkey.pdf

i work through questions and sometimes if i get lucky i even see them again on my in-class test. also, i make sure to know the bold terms in the book because my teacher loves to put confusing vocab questions on the test. and if there is a really intricate, detailed drawing that looks important i draw it myself and try to understand it.

i also use this site: http://sps.k12.ar.us/massengale/welcome_to_ap_biology.htm mainly for the powerpoints and the sample lab write ups

i study/do homework for ap biology for about 15 hours a week, but sometimes 20 if we did a lab that week because it takes me about 5 hours to do a lab write up.

hope this helps and good luck!

Thanks for the replies guys...keep em coming
