Study time in HS < College ?

For me, I had my senior year:

AP Gov
AP Calc
AP English
AP Spanish equivalent
then a couple other classes like gym, art, journalism

basiclly I had the same difficulty in college

World Civ
Calculus
ENG Adv.
Psychology
University Course

The English courses were alike, my HS calc course was harder, my HS gov class was harder than world civ, and my psych class was harder than my HS spanish class.

Roughly in HS, I spent 30hrs/week in class, 8hrs/week hw
In college, I spent 10hrs/week in class, 8hrs/week hw

The difference in my HS estimate includes the time I spent studying for tests and preparing papers, in college, boost that average up to 13hrs/week

So HS senior year=38 total hours/wk and 4.00GPA
College 1st sem.=25 total hours/wk and 3.81GPA

Both had similar GPA scales, onlly diff is hs had A+=4.33

I'm telling you all of this information because I was scared, like you, of the courseload. Like you, I too was a normal student who balanced study/free time. I'm not especially smart, didn't study for the SAT and got 1180, 1270, 1390 (old format) respectively, but at the same time I know when to buckle down. The thing is, the college calendar is like 3.5 months and the first month I spent like 15hrs/week in class and 5hrs/week doing hw=20 total hours. The last 2.5 months I spent like 7hrs/week in class and 20hrs/week doing hw=27 total hours.

HOWEVER, it just depends on the classes you take and your professors. I know for a fact this semester, it'll be 23hrs/week in class and 20hrs/week studying for 43 total hours, so my 25hrs/week days are going to be long gone.

college is not hard if you take AP/Honors Classes in hs. heres a comparison of classes my senior year hs vs. first semster college.

HS: Honors PreCalc, Honors Physics, AP Chem, AP English, Economics
College: Calculus, General Science, English, Writing, Spanish (intermediate)

hs my senior year was really tough with physics especially so when i got into a non science major course in college it was soooooo easy compared my hs work. spanish has always been easy for me so that wasn't a hard class. calc was easy because i had a great teacher- just required a lot of practice problems and stuff. the writing classes were my hardest since we had to read alot of hard books and write TONS OF PAPERS.

depending on the classes you pick college shouldnt be too bad after having a challenging AP/honors curriculum in hs.

message me with ANY questions you have!!!

It also depends on what you're majoring in. For example this quarter in college I'm taking Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Physics: Electricity and Magnetism and a physics lab, and a GE humanities course. > work than ap's (bio euro bccalc spanishlanh physicsc englit) during high school.

:)

this year i am taking
stats, AP Lit, AP US Hist, AP Chem and peer tutor

i plan to major in chemistry, so i am assuming that i will be taking math classes (never had calc in HS) and science classes (i also like physics) so i guess those will require a bunch of work, i will try and minimize lit classes (lots of reading right now is a killer)... just an fyi

i really appreciate all of your comments and insights, they are alleviating some anxiety. right now i am kind of fooling around with finding the border for doing the least amount of work and getting A's, hopefully this will allow me to comfortably balance my social/school life in college...

i think my biggest problem (and worry?) is how much time i spend reading...i try and get every detail so it takes for EVER...i am realizing that this will probably need to change because i almost obsess about things i dont understand (reading over/over takes lots of time)

thanks again
