I have my first chem exam a week from tomorrow and am looking for some advice in terms of studying. It is on three chapters: organic chemistry, thermodynamics and chemical kinetics.

The test is all multiple choice and is somewhere around 25 questions.

I have been struggling a lot with the course because I did not take the first half of General Chemistry at the same school.

Ive been going to tutoring and seeking extra help but it has not helped as much as I have hoped. Any advice for how to study and do well on the exam?

Organic chemistry on a general chemistry exam usually deals with naming a bunch of stuff. Because there will be a lot of tricky questions for this, it is imperative that you read through a lot of examples and practice problems. Thermodynamics is all about fairly simple math problems but to avoid being surprised, you should try doing many practice problems on this. Chemical kinetics is also about a few simple rules which you may not fully understand unless you see examples of all kind. To study for this, you should try doing practice problems.

Read the chapters. Write notes on the chapter. Practice problems. Read chapters again. Practice more problems. Read the notes you took. Practice more problems.

From my experience with chemistry, apply, apply, and apply. Keep doing practice problems and understand how to apply the formulas and know the exceptions of what not.
