hey all,
this is already my 2nd thread in the BU forum, but I have a few questions about study abroad that I can’t seem to find the answers to on the BU website.

can you study abroad for a term with a program outside of BU? I only ask this because BU does not offer any study abroad opportunities to Korea and I would really like to study there for a term.

are there any age restrictions on studying abroad? I’m going to be 16 going into college and although I doubt I’ll study abroad during my first year there, I’ll only be 17 for my soph year as well. will I have to wait until jr year when I’m 18?

with a major in modern languages/comparative lit is it required to study abroad and if it is, do you have to go abroad with BU?

these may be on the site but I’m blind/really can’t find it
many thanks in advance~!

So you're gonna be 19 when you graduate from college? Wow, I'm 19 now and I haven't started college yet. I'll graduate at 24.That's so unfair, lol.

As for your questions, I think that BU can arrange a program for you wherever you choose. You usually go abroad your junior year, not sophomore. I don't think age would be a problem, although it may be slightly complicated to be underage and live in a foreign country... You can't rent an apartment, a car, etc.

^ahhh awesome. yeah, I'm gonna be 19, haha. I won't even be able to drink before graduating college. not that it matters to me, but that's such a weird thought lol

what do you mean by arrange a program though? like will I be able to receive financial aid for it? I read on the website they do some sort of aid with the programs they sponsor, would that be the same if they were arranging a program?

but I don't think living in korea specifically at 18 will be a huge problem because koreans count age differently so I'd be counted as 19 there, and legal age of an adult there is 18 anyway. =D

Study Abroad with Boston University International Programs I know you've already been on the study abroad website. But try calling them. Their number is right at the bottom of the screen. I know that you can do programs outside of BU but I don't know the logistics of it. They'll be able to answer all your questions about it, especially since you're going to be so young and most of us won't have dealt with that situation.

Yes, you can study abroad with a program outside of BU.

I don’t know of any age restrictions, but there are some programs that require you to either have a certain class standing or complete certain courses before studying abroad. For example, in COM, before studying abroad, you have to complete the main writing course in your major, which is usually only something you can take fall semester of your sophomore year at the earliest.

I don’t think ANY majors at BU are REQUIRED to study abroad. (Maybe SHA students? But I don’t think so.)

I’ve been told BU has one of the largest abroad programs. I know kids who’ve gone to London, Senegal, Australia, etc. It’s common and encouraged.

When I say “largest abroad programs,” I mean specifically BU facilities, BU programs abroad. Every school in the country connects to overseas programs. Every single one. They often don’t tell you in the admissions process that they don’t run their own programs with their own people.
