Studying Abroad at UNC Chapel Hill

Hi, I’m currently in my second year at university in the UK and I have been accepted to study abroad at UNC Chapel Hill next year.

I just have a question about housing - I’m currently trying to choose between on campus housing and Granville Towers. Do most third and fourth year students live off campus? Does anyone know if exchange students tend to be put together in the same residence halls and as roommates? This may sound weird but I really don’t want to be placed with loads of other study abroad students from the UK, and likewise I don’t want to be the only third year in my hall.

I’d really appreciate any advice - thanks!

As a parent, I can only give you a vague answer. I asked this question about four years ago and was told that about 60% of sophomores live on campus and maybe 40% of juniors and even less for seniors. These numbers are probably way off but so I would ask Housing for better numbers. Since a lot of students study aboard like you and since off campus apartments usually require a 1 year lease (although many allow subletting), I suspect you will find many upper class-men living on campus.

You might also want to check out the learning community for transfer students.

The general trend is that south campus (except for Rams Village) is heavily freshman. Mid-campus and north campus will be more upper classmen. I suspect (others can comment) that north campus is likely to be more juniors and seniors. However, north campus seems to have more corridor style dorms while south and mid campus will have more suite style options.

In case you haven’t figured this out yet, Chapel Hill has a great bus system that is free to use. Living off campus is popular and there are a lot of options.
