Studying Abroad

I wasn't quite sure which section to post this in so I just went with this one.

Anyway, I was wondering how these foreign study programs work in general. Do you have to pay anything other than the plane ticket? What if you opt to use another school's study abroad program and transfer the credits? Will that cost anything more? And once you get there, is it kind of a self contained environment that you'll be living in? Does each school have its own areas or do all these American schools come together and have its students form a little American community?

How a study abroad program works varies A LOT from college to college. Some colleges will let you transfer credits, others won't. Some programs are used by multiples colleges, others are only available to a particular college. Do you know which college you'll be attending? Or at least do you have a list of colleges you'll be applying to?

Notre Dame, Columbia, and Maryland are probably my top choices. Anybody know anything about those?
