Studying Abroad

The way our school sets up our pre-med track, it has us taking physics II the fall of our junior year. That also happens to be the same semester as when we are recommended to study abroad, since if we do it any later it messes with the med school admissions process.

One of the programs for studying abroad allows us to intern at Parliament in London for credit, while taking one or two courses at a local London College (I think we can choose from Queen Mary and a couple others that I can't remember right now). When we take a course at one of these schools, they count as transfer credit.

If I go abroad to do this program and take physics while I am there, will it look bad as transfer credit? I know taking science courses at local CC's isn't looked highly upon, but these are four-year institutions. If not, then the only way I can get physics out of the way before MCAT's is to take a semester with three science classes, which would be brutal.

It wont look bad...

1.) Three science courses at least once is relatively par for the course.
2.) Study abroad is, I've been told, a very worthwhile experience.
3.) One science course at a local London college would probably be just fine, if you're doing fine in the others and have a solid MCAT score.
4.) There are some excellent universities in London. I believe Imperial in particular has a reputable science program?

bluedevilmike, I know how your view on summer classes - how premeds could be using their summer time much more effectively with research / volunteering. But taking classes over the summer (on study abroad) would be a much different situation, right?

Abroad strikes me as a different story, agreed.

When do interviews for medical school admissions start wrapping up? December? January? I am looking to study abroad the spring of my senior year.

Not do-able. Interviews can push into March, and in any case you need to be urgently contactable for waistlist discussions.

erh,

Consider Univ College of London. It has an affiliated hospital and many departments in biomedical sciences, research labs etc.

The college below is considered to be equivalent to any State funded school IMO.

Academic Departments by Faculty

My niece who graduated from this school is now post-doc'ing in Weill Cornell/NY city. If you have any specific questions, PM me. I could get her to answer them for you.

I am a freshman considering doing study abroad, and I want to plan now. When is the best time, typically, to do study abroad? I don't really want to do it next year, right?

Sometime junior year or during one of the summers seems like the best time to go abroad. Your first two years will have too many crucial classes to do it.

Not always the case. I studied abroad first semester of sophomore year. It was a LOT of fun, and my grades were excellent.

With careful planning almost anything except application year (senior year) can be accomodated. Junior year or summers are typical.
