Studying Arabic and volunteering in Middle East

After taking two years of Arabic at an Ivy leauge school, daughter wants to do volunteer work in Middle east ( Ezypt, Morroco, Jordan etc.) and would like to enhance her knowledge of Arabic. last year she has volunteered in Eastern Europe and complted her spanish lanaguge immersion. Looking for parental input. Looking for a program of 4-8 weeks duration. 4 weeks is preferable. Cost is a consideration but experience and safety trumps all.

Thanks

I can't direct you to a specific program, but my impression is that Jordan is positively overrun with American kids these days. This past summer, I had one niece (22), two cousins (one of them in her 30s, one 18), and the son of a friend (24) there. The daughter of other friends just returned from two years of post-BA human rights work there.

Nothing bad happened to any of them. All, by the way, would be considered Jewish by most people, although only two of the five would actually identify themselves that way.

A knowledgeable person on this topic is a poster named Mini. I recall a long thread on this around 6 months ago. Just now, I tried to use the Search function to find that thread, using the words "Arabic" and then "Middle East" but I struck out.

Perhaps if you send a PM to Mini, he'd be able to identify the post for you to reread.

For North Africa (Morocco, Tunis, and Algeria), here is a link to the AIMS website which has a link to their advanced Arabic language-area study program. Pre-requisite is two years of MSA. FWIW, a good friend of the family (now a senior at an Ivy), also with two years of Arabic under her belt, spent about 6 weeks over this past summer at a different language program based in Ifrane. She had a great time, had no trouble getting around, and improved her Arabic greatly.
