Studying at MiT over the summer, where should i stay?

Preferably a short walk / commute to campus. Does anyone know of any places?

Many of the MIT fraternities offer relatively inexpensive summer boarding – that would be the first place I would check. There will also be a reasonable number of summer sublets from graduate students at various universities in the Boston area, but those will be significantly more expensive than boarding at a fraternity.

Like Mollie said, you can also sublet from someone on Craigslist in the Central Square or Harvard Square areas. Central, you can walk; Harvard Sq. would require the T.

Also, if you are over 18, you can stay in MIT’s dorms through the Guest Housing. I think it’s $1800-2500 for the whole summer, depending on building and room size.

WiseGuy - I’m assuming that’s for someone who’s not a student as far as the age? I hadn’t heard 18 before and my son (currently a freshman at MIT) is applying for UROPs and planning to stay in the dorms and would turn 18 during the summer. Would the same age limit apply to the frats if so?

I don’t think an age limit would apply to current students for the dorms. It’s possible that individual frats might have different rules – I imagine their policies regarding liability could be set by the national fraternity.

That’s correct. If you’re a registered undergraduate, you are eligible for summer housing.

Otherwise, if you are a guest/affiliate associated with a department, etc., you need to be 18 or older to stay in MIT’s housing for the summer.

Here’s the webpage with more details:
[Reserving Department-Sponsored Guest Housing | MIT Housing](<a href=“Housing & Residential Services | Division of Student Life”>Housing & Residential Services | Division of Student Life)

That rule does not necessarily apply to the fraternities, though. You’d need to contact them to find out their own individual policies.

im sadly not 18 yet
probably going to stay at a frat, which ones are the more studious / calm ones?
