Studying for PSAT vs. Studying for SAT

Is there a difference on how to study for the PSATs and how to study for the SATs? My sister is a Junior, and so far she has only done SAT prep, not PSAT prep. Any suggestions on how to study, the test date is in October. PLEASE! I'm entreating all CCers! (And, if you don't mind, please include a list of PSAT books that worked well for you >.<)

i liked barrons the best for the psat. i also used kaplan, which was good, and petersons, which wasnt that good. however if she has already studied for the sat, she should be set for the psat. the biggest difference is that there is no essay on the psat. also, the difficulty of the math questions is easier. when she registers for the psat, she will get a free practice test. if she does well on that, she should be set. if not, then she should buy the barrons book. or she could just study from her sat books.

thanx andreaaaaaa!

The PSAT’s are made up of actual SAT questions from the past couple years, and all sections are of lower difficulty, plus, the math isn’t advanced (meaning, more geometry vs. algebra 2). The only other differences in the multiple-choice portions are the section length and overall test length.
So, prepping for the SAT will more than prepare you for the question types.
However, there is one free practice test you can get from the guidance counselors, and you can buy other previous actual exams from collegeboard.com for a mere $3 each. You should buy as many as you can, and take them full length; they are quite a good investment. P.S. I don’t work for the College Board:)

If your sister has the Blue Book “Official Guideto the SAT” put out by College Board, that is all she needs. She can use it to study for the PSAT or SAT. The SAT is longer, has an essay, and a bit more higher math. Other than that, the questions on the PSAT and SAT are similar. Just skip the essay practice for now. Get the PSAT guide from the high school counselor–it has one official practice test that should be very accurate and will help your sister get familiar with the exact format of the PSAT.

I’ve also used Barron’s–found some errors in the book–not as well-edited IMO-- but the scores are comparable.

I LOVE CCers !!! sniff dry tear
thanks for the replies guys.
I’ll update my sisters scores later…
GOOOOO CC!!!
