Studying in India

Hey all

Question for Indian students and/or those in the know: I'm considering spending the summer in India learning Hindi, and so far online research has thrown up very little (maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places). Any recommendations for reputable universities/colleges where I can do that ? Preferably in an urban setting, say Delhi or Mumbai ...

Thanks !

Are you staying in India or in a different country? Because if you are staying in a different country I would say it's a waste of time and maybe money if you just want to learn Hindi. Buy some books and maybe see if there are classes here.

If you are staying in India I'd say just look up like Mumbai University or something like that.

Mumbai colleges like Xaviers, HR, JaiHind, NM/Mithibai, Ruia, etc. are good colleges, but I doubt how much it'll help you speak hindi. most of the college students in mumbai speak Hinglish (Hindi+English) with a lot of slangs. apart from hindi, i can assure you that if you go to any of good colleges in mumbai, you'll have a blast; while you can join some private language classes to learn hindi...
also, all colleges are closed during summers - fyi

I think you'll waste your time and money if you're planning to come to India just to learn Hindi, but if it's just something you want to do for fun while you're here, join a college from Delhi university(check their site <a href="http://www.du.ac.in%5B/url%5D">www.du.ac.in</a>) /Mumbai university(<a href="http://www.mu.ac.in%5B/url%5D">www.mu.ac.in</a>) but if you come now, it's unlikely that you'll be able to join regular classes as the session begins around July but you can study through a correspondence course nonetheless.

Kearn hindi where u r and then some for a hands on practice .. where r u currently

lol
:D:D:D

Thanks for all the replies. :) I'm at Columbia (NYC), which does offer Hindi, but most if not all of the credits I have for language are probably going to go towards Sanskrit. I was considering a summer abroad, and Hindi in India seemed a good idea + good fun. Guess that's out now ... Maybe SOAS in London will offer something next year. Anyone been there ?

I think London would be a good idea to learn Hindi.. Lotsa Indians/Pakistanis there so you'd might quite a few people whom you could practice your hindi with and London is generally a great city too.

In London maybe u will end up learning some stuff ....

:)

London is after all a cool place to be in... for u sp.. as u will hav ease as a foreigner
