Get your foot in where? The State Dept.? The UN? International NGOs?

In that list, there appears to be some advantage to grads of elite schools for top State Dept. positions, but a qualified grad of a wide range of schools certainly can reach these sorts of positions. These represent only a relatively small number of State Dept. positions and also don’t necessarily reflect who goes into international careers with other agencies and organizations. There are many schools that provide solid international studies and language programs. Of course, you don’t necessarily need an IR major, either.
