Congratulations on your acceptance to Hartt. We look forward to seeing you this summer at orientation!

We do not offer a minor in Jazz Studies. Undergraduate Composition majors at Hartt must audition on a classical or jazz instrument or voice. What type of audition did you do? You will have your weekly private lessons in the genre that you auditioned. Composition majors also have two years of instrumental/vocal performing organizations. You will participate in the organization that fits your audition instrument:

Classical: orchestra, wind ensemble, choir
Jazz: big band or combos

Students may audition for ensembles outside of their audition genre. Entrance into these elective ensembles is based on need for your specific instrument. You may take extra lessons on a different instrument through our Community Division (for a fee beyond the cost of tuition). You can also enroll in classes that are not included in your curriculum with approval of the professor. Students who are required to take the class are always given preference.

Composition students are required to take two years of piano keyboarding. You will take piano keyboarding in the genre of music in which you auditioned.
