Hey guys, just wanted to ask if memorizing this : Word Lists : Vocabulary word lists for SAT, PSAT, GRE and other tests would make any difference. Hope to get an answer soon.

Thanks in advance,
med7at.

Well before doing my first SAT I tried memorizing the vocab and gave up at about the 50 word mark and got 660… This time in May I knew memorizing doesn’t help me so I focused more on actually practicing on the test itself and I got 800 in the reading section. Memorizing didnt work for me but actually working over what I got wrong and why really helped. I did 2 sections out of the blue college board book a day for a month leading up to the exam.

Med7at,

I’m not familiar with that list - I checked out the link and it looks like a mix of SAT and GRE words. There are lots of books out there if you prefer the book format. Barron’s direct hits is decent.

If you prefer an online resource - majortests.com has a decent list.

If you like the app format (iPhone iPad iPod touch), try

The Daily Word

It is a vocab review app that buzzes you with a new word each day. It has a notecard creation system that helps you study the words and 200 practice questions to test your progress.

Good luck with your prep!!

Well, first of all, thanks for the fast responses. Second of all, since it seems like you really know what you’re talking about LearningEdge, do you believe that studying vocabulary will increase my score in CR?

The reason I ask is that, bloodsplatter, I do not really understand how am I supposed to solve sentence completion without word memorizing. I understand that practice should be helpful with the reading passages, but isn’t studying vocabulary is also essential to answering sentence completion? I am really surprised you managed to get 800 in the CR section without memorizing any words.

I did! I memorized 50 of them (actually it was 70 but I forgot about more than 20 of them when I looked back at the list of words…) and the 50 that I could remember really helped, but I kept forgetting words this way so I had to resort to other methods of memorization…

The way I did it is was I tried to remember every word I got wrong or words I completely had no idea what the heck they meant when I was doing the sections (I tend to remember things better if I get them wrong once) but some of my friends can remember words just by doing the lists (I can’t, I forget them too easily) so if you are one of those people then by all means do the list. But I found that it really helped to annotate all over the place when you go back and mark your questions with the meaning of the word. At least it made the meanings more distinctive and memorable to me.

But the way I did it takes a long time and takes doing A LOT of practices (isn’t very time efficient) so maybe you should try a combination of both memorizing from the list and annotating all over the place.

It is just that, I have four months before my first real trail in October, and I am freaking out! I do not know how to prepare for the CR section as it seems to be the hardest among the S.A.T subjects. But, I am going to take your advice and I hope it helps. Thanks!
