How would you recommend studying vocabulary?

I'm currently trying three methods right now:
- Hard-core memorizing
- Reading "classic" books with difficult word definitions on the side
- Looking up words I don't know that I come across

And I'm thinking of studying some Latin and Greek. Any thoughts on this idea, useful or waste of time?

I'm shooting for a 2400 :D

hardcore memorizing its definitely not a good way to study vocab. In order to study the vocabulary, you have to understand it. Try reading books with good vocabulary! The American language has over 40,000 words so its nearly impossible to know all the definitions. Study the prefixes and roots! They help out alot ! :)

one of my friends said he used sparknotes' 1000 most used words, or something along those lines.. on the last SAT, he said he knew all but 2 words out of all the vocab, and on those 2 questions with the 2 words, he knocked out all the other choices, so he picked the ones he didn't know (and he checked them later.. turned out he was right)

that's what i plan on doing for vocab for the nob. SAT (i usually leave 1-2 blank and miss another 1-2 on vocab... which isn't bad.. it just means the highest i can probably get is like a 720-ish instead of a 780-ish)... so i'm going to really get as many vocab words down as i can

does anyone have some list of the most used vocab words that they can post on here (or link a website on here that has said words)?
