Studying with music?

Is studying with music on preferably? Or not?

It depends on music I think. If the music is something like classic, then it might be preferable. But I can't study when I'm listening to my favourite musics like rock, techno, and even They Might Be Giants! They're too distructing!

Music can help me focus on what I'm doing, and not what's going on around me (particularly helpful during work-time in class or the library), but it has to be a CD that I've heard many times. If it's a brand new CD, I'll be listening to the lyrics or whatever, and not concentrating on my work!

Yeah it's kinda necessary when I'm doing boring stuff like defining terms, but studying studying .. unless it's on low .. super low .. then no, I can't. But working in complete utter silence is kinda distracting too. I'm used to something going on, like siblings yelling downstairs, etc. If nothing is happening, I put the music on really low so I don't fall asleep
Like even at the library, people are coming in and out, some are whispering, etc so it's not complete silence ya know

Yeah, music helps when I study too. Like sarorah said, dead silence is a distraction for me. I'll play anything as long as it has a slow beat....fast paced songs like anything I could dance to would be a distraction too lol. Because then I would get up and dance and sing...and not do my work which is very bad. I just like soft sounding music if I study...something like the Postal Service/Coldplay/Keane or something turned down (if I have to concentrate really hard like taking notes). But I can work with other types....depends on how well I know the material:D

I listen to fast paced music esp when studying maths and sciences because that just requires understanding. I need total silence for English, history, social sciences and stuff because that requires a lot of memorising.

But in the library, I ALWAYS need my mp3 player because I get distracted sooo quickly: just watching people pick out books, looking at their clothes style and making fun of it in my head, trying to see if that guy is hot or not, etc..

But I also get distracted when I'm in complete silence - my nails. They ahsjfsnfjengjengmdf!@#$@$!&*!)(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I always pick at them. And that takes about 20min!

The only subject where I listen to music and study at the same time is math.

For some reason it helps me concentrate and focus. But if I tried to listen to music while reading a book for English or history, then I wouldn't be able to do it.

haha nofx, complete silence also bugs me, but i need it when it comes to reading things for english or history. i always listen to music when im doing math.

Music + Math = GOOD

Science sometimes works, but there is too much language and reading. Chem kinda works, but not bio.

I always listen to music when i'm studying. Programming music is usually instrumental stuff or industrial. Rammstein, NIN and Royksopp are the usuals for that. Studying maths... usually power/melodic metal. Sonata Arctica, Hammerfall, Rhapsody, Nightwish. Languages... well Japanese... J-rock :)

If I'm doing English or history work, I cannot concentrate if there is music...

rainbow kirby, what exactly is industrial? Any connection with indie rock?

Industrial = bands like Rammstein and Nine Inch Nails. It's rock with a raw edge, and often fast-paced with a good beat.

This song will help you get any math/science/grunt work done:

Microbe - Xit 2 Nowhere (Full Intention Mix)

Yes, it's electronic...but it also helped me do a p-set of 100 problems in about an hour.

I always study with my music on. I can'c concentrate on some things like english, social or science if there isn't a little bit of music on. I can do math without music no problem. I could do the other subjects without music too, but I find that it helps me to concentrate. I don't know, that's just me.

I sometimes study with my music on. I turn it down low though, since it can get a bit distracting (Children of Bodom, Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, etc). When I need instrumental music, I listen to Apocalyptica because it's classical music that sounds like metal. Keeps me awake but not so loud that I get distracted.

I absolutely have to have music on when I do hw or study. It's the same when I sleep as well - the quieter it is, the harder it is for me to sleep, so sometimes I'll have rock playing lol.

I can't stand listening to songs that I've heard on the radio a dozen times while studying so when I'm at home, I'll usually have a stream of this stuff or some other obscure music I find on the net playing.

I turn on a fan. Somehow, my practice SAT score improved 100 pts that day...
Haha. but having something in the background humming is nice because dead silence is distracting.

high-fives yanners
Blind Guardian, CoB and Nightwish rock! :)

YEAH!!! MUSIC!!!!
In my opinion, as long as the song doesn't have understandable words, you should listen to it while studying because if your FULL concentration is on your work....it's hard to concentrate you know? ^---^
