Im just wondering I eat a lot, is meal plan four for me? Its only 115 all you can eat meals. And only 500 bucks to spend on other things???

i had meal plan 3 and it was a complete waste.

just remember, the dining hall is only open twice a day and you can only swipe into the dining hall 2 times a day! they will not allow u to use more than one meal each time the dining hall is open. also their hours r really bad so it could just be that you wont even be able to have "brunch" there twice a wk at all. If i remember correctly the dining hall is open from 10:30-1:30 and from 5-8 or something like that. A current freshman should feel free to correct me. But i'm sure u see that these hours are terribly inconvenient.

Just for the record, first semester i had about 60 meals left over and second semester i had about 40 after making an honest effort to finish them. Total thats 100 meals at the going price of $10 a meal for plan 3 i think would be a good $1000 down the drain....bottom line...get plan 4!!

EDIT: oh, also, the dining hall closes the thursday before major breaks so if you are counting any breaks you will be on campus, the dining hall will not be open then. And on weekends (at least when i was a frosh) the food was TERRIBLE and there was practically no selection.

MEAL PLAN FOUR!!!!!

and...you can always steal stuff from the dining hall too. like fruit. and gladware makes anything possible. I have meal plan four, and make a real attempt to use it. I have about 45 meals left this semester. Last semester I ended with 2 meals. No one uses all their meals, and you can always bum off friends guest meals. :)

I think they meant Linux-friendly as in not requiring Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Quicktime, and other such proprietary programs that do not have native equivalents in Linux. I wouldn't describe Linux as an obscure OS; its usage share may be about the same or exceeding that of OS X.

I have a question about the internet. How long of ethernet cables do we need? Are there some dorms where we have to use a big cable to get to internet source?

the ethernet ports are positioned by where they have the desks set up so you really don’t need a long cord. I think mine’s around 5 feet and even though I use my computer in bed instead of at my desk, it’s never been an issue.

Also with meals, you won’t be eating breakfast at the dinning hall really, it’s much easier to use points to get one of the (also horrible-tasting but slightly less toxic) bagels from one of the on-campus dinning locations. The dinning hall failed health inspection in the 07-08 year, and idk what happened w/ that this year.

thanks metsfan. Wow that’s weird too say. lol.

another note-- ethernet cables DO depend on room setup. In Carman, I know of some kids who needed to buy 25-50ft cables (so that they could tape them around the door.

Just get a wireless router… but hook it up properly or else CUIT will get on your case

Please, Can some one tell me the height of the space that is available under the bed? Can the height of bed be raised to make more space under? I want to get a set of drawers (sterlite) to put under the bed. The height of the drawers is 11"– or just bins (14").

i know that a freshman meal plan is required, but is the meal plan a part of the tuition/fees? or does one have to deposit the $2000ish online through dining dollars/e-bill/etc?

it depends on the height of the bed in your room (also some beds come with drawers underneath, or with drawers that can fit underneath them. and yeah, you can get bed risers to make a bit more space. 11 inches and probably even 14 inches should certainly be do-able with bed risers, or quite possibly even without.

i think the meal plan is part of the fees part of tuition/fees, you don’t have to do anything with dinning dollars (that’s a whole separate thing). don’t worry, columbia will tell you (via ssol/email usually) when they want your money.

According to the welcome packet, beds are 9.5 inches off the floor. Make of that what you will.

that meal plan is included on your bill that is on ssol. its not part of the tuition. it shows up separately, but its definitely there.

I should also mention that many reasonable people disagree about the quality of the food in John Jay. I, for one, think that it’s passable and often even good. A few nights per semester they have special catered dinners from local providers, and those nights even upperclassmen will stand in line to get in the door and sample the food from a bunch of area restaurants.

Many people, however, do indeed get bored with the offerings. What seems so appetizing and appealing during orientation will feel like sludge by May, at least to most people, even if the actual quality hasn’t changed. You may start to crave variety, at least if you’re not the type to need a routine all the time.

My final argument is, John Jay is superior to the cafeterias at many peer schools. You’re not going to get “haute cuisine” no matter where you go. OK, perhaps excepting Yale, from what I’ve heard, but others, definitely. And of course the off-campus eating options destroy those of almost any peer school.

Depends on where you’re living. Some places like the LLC will have beds that are height adjustable.

why would you guys eat at the cafeteria, when there are tons of places to eat in downtown nyc…

because…

you’ve already paid for it

columbia is not in downtown nyc…and noone wants to travel an hour round trip to grab a bite to eat

I use SeamlessWeb a lot (which is pretty much Russian Roulette…), but I’m also not in the dorms though. Not sure if that works differently for those in the dorms.

I’m gonna plug campusfood.com… takeout food + parent’s credit card. mmmmm

How does campusfood.com work exactly? Is it reliable?
