I'm going to be out of the country from beginning of June to last week of August, so this poses some inconveniences. There will be more than a month where no one is in my house. I would like to know as specifically as possible 1) what things MIT will be sending us MIT 2010ers, 2) when in the summer, and 3) if there is anything that I will have to fill out, etc. and send back immediately within a certain time period.

er, I don't think giving MIT a summer address in China is very feasible? or... find a friend to go into my house and retrieve my mail and open it for me? but if I have forms to complete... My family's never met this issue before O.O Thanks for any help!

You can just call the admissions office.

There are things you'll need to do by certain dates in June, July, AND Aug: registering for the housing lottery, taking the FEE (or certifying that you place out), sending in medical forms, selecting an advising type, getting into the HASS-D lottery.... These things can mostly be done online, but you'll need to get the mailings to deal with it. You probably do need to talk with Admissions; why couldn't a temporary address in China work? There are undergrads from China at MIT, they have surely sent mailings to China before.

Check the dates etc. on the first-year site: the "Countdown" page has on it exactly what you're required to send in when. (The words "mandatory" and "must" appear several times.) It's a summer FILLED with sending things back, so it's a good idea to work out now a way to make that possible.

I second what mootmom said above, except that you'll probably go farther talking with the Academic Resource Center; after June 1 or some such date, you're the property of the ARC, not Admissions. :)

A lot of stuff that needs to get done can probably get done before you leave (school report, medical report, possibly housing lottery), and if you correspond with the ARC, I'm sure they'll advise you as to what course of action to take with everything else.

thanks, awesome help!

hey i'm going to china during the summer too!

hehe i know alot of seniors are this summer. yay! =)

Really? I'm going to Shanghai. Which part are you going to? (BTW. i speak no chinese..lol)

Giving a China address should be just fine, they'll DHL you any papers you need (seems to take anywhere from 2-5 business days).
