As an admitted student, I was just wondering if people had any suggestions as to the kinds of things I might want to bring with me, or to buy and keep for my own personal use. I read something in the Yale Parents thread about having a personal printer. Wanted to know if there was any other stuff that might prove useful bringing with me or buying for private use. :P

If I were you I would wait until you know who your suite mates are and then e-mail them. You want to economize on what you bring. If one of your suite mates has a wireless printer there is no need to bring one. The same goes for the common room items. The only items I would say for sure would be bed linens and a desk lamp and possibly plastic storage boxes for under the bed. A tower fan would come in handy but if you are in a double your room mate may already have one.

I know one thing that was definitely useful for our daughter was a standing lamp for the common room (I think we paid $10 for one of those you put together yourself from walmart). The lighting in the rooms (at least in TD) is not great. Other than that, just your own personal items, and you can work out the rest with your suite-mates. The Yale book store sells lots of useful common stuff at the beginning of the year, like garbage cans, microwave ovens, etc.

There seems to be variation among the rooms and suites in the different colleges. For instance, a friend has told me that her freshman son’s room came with substantial storage space available on wall shelves. My daughter, on the other hand, has a room with little storage space built into it. We ended up buying her a large open shelf unit. (We got an easily assembled/disassembled unit from Home Depot.)

I echo the sentiments of others. You will need to see what your room and suite are like, and you will most likely want to coordinate with the others in your living unit. As you purchase items, you will want to keep in mind what the summer storage policy is in your college.

That said, here is what we supplied this year:
Bookshelf (You’d think a college would provide these, but the room had none.)
Lighting (There is only a dim overhead light in the room. We bought a multi-head floor lamp, desk lamp, and reading lamp for near the bed.)
Wireless printer
External hard drive for laptop back-ups
Under-bed storage boxes (stocked ahead of time with all manner of stationery, personal care, and cleaning supplies, as well as a tool kit and heavy duty extension cords)
Butterfly chair (collapsible)
Refrigerator (rented from the ASA on campus)
Bedding set (purchased through the ASA and picked up when we arrived on campus)
Clothes hamper
Open shelf unit (as mentioned above)
Storage boxes and open containers for the shelf unit
Full-length mirror

If you end up at Morse they have a bookshelf in the rooms at Durfee so there is no need to buy or bring one. If you want to PM me with your e-mail address I can send to you the list I put together for my son to send to his suite mates to figure out who would supply what.
