What are recommendations?

Fridge? Microwave? Printer? An Asian? Ethernet cable? Power splitter? A safe? A gamecube? A framed portrait of Kim Jong Il (If it's allowed, yes I went to Pyongyang last summer)?

What should I bring?
Bring your own towels, pillow, bedding to fit an extra long twin bed (36" x 80") and a non-halogen desk lamp. You may also bring a telephone, stereo, television, fan, clock, computer, printer, power surge protector, and mini-vacuum. Once you receive your room assignment information in early September, it is a good idea to call your new roommates and discuss what each of you will bring. Click here for more information.

Can I bring a refrigerator or microwave?
Yes. You may want to bring your own mini refrigerator (one small refrigerator is allowed in each room). It must be smaller than five cubic feet and have a safe UL-approved electrical system. Microwaves may also be brought. Check with roommates to make sure you don’t duplicate items.

Does that mean when we get assigned housing, they’ll also provide us with our roommate’s numbers?

Yes. They provide your roommate’s phone number, UCSD email and location (city).

And here is a good place to start:

My own personal recommendation is to bring a foam pad for your mattress (or buy it in SD). Most dorms’ mattresses were very hard and rough, and I just got a cheap like tempurpedic thing from Costco. It made my life MUCH better.

Bringing an Asian? Not cool man, not cool at all.

On another note is there air conditioning in dorms? ERC to be exact…

^No, but you won’t need it. Bring a fan for super hot days (there are probably like 5 throughout the entire year). San Diego’s weather is really mild, there’s always a nice breeze coming in the window. The dorms do have heaters for the winter, which I found extremely necessary.

are the floors in the Muir dorms coed or is it by building?

Totally forgot about the coastal breeze… living in the bay area I take it for granted.

~~~~~A little off topic but can/ how can we ship things to our dorm? Like from amazon.com?
^ ooh, yes - shipping from amazon!
btw - sign up for amazon prime for free with your @ucsd.edu email address (free 2-day shipping for a year)
Ok ummm for the lack of better words…***? I’ve read the question you posted on the thread about downloading illegal software (even when the answer was already on the thread) and now I read the post I quoted above. ■■■■■… -_-
Cheers my good man.
So how would I address the packages for delivery to a dorm? And where would packages be dropped off by the carrier and picked up by me?
(sorry I’m a newbie incoming freshman)
U mad bro?
when you get your housing assignment, you will also get your mailbox #.
it should look something like this:
9450 Gilman Drive
La Jolla, CA 92092
whatever your box is
or you can put your box number before the school’s address
don’t worry, its really simple to do(:
@3down: the floors are coed. each suite is an assigned gender. you may get a suite of the opposite gender across from you, or not. it depends.
@lakersftw - that’s brilliant - thank you! :D
@lakersftw. Yeah my brother showed me that and told me to sign up as well. Added to my question from the very beginning. Do they only give your roommate or your suite-mates too?
No your housing assignment has all the names of your suitemates listed as well
droobles91,
are halogen lamps banned or are you just suggesting non-halogen ones?
how about renting vacuums? is it an inconvenient process?
thanks all for the great tips!
@92faim,
Everything in my post was copied and pasted directly from the UCSD HDH (Housing, Dining, Hospitality) site, in the link that I posted they strongly recommend non-halogen lamps as halogen lamps can get extremely hot/become a fire hazard.
I was in the Sixth dorms last year and my suite had a vacuum, though it often went missing so we had to borrow the neighboring building’s. It was no problem for the most part. I’ve never rented a vacuum so someone else might have to help you with that one.
Good luck with everything :)
