I'm currently a junior in high school looking to go the the naval academy. I have already been accepted to NASS and am just beginning my nomination requests. I had a question about certain things and if they'd seriously affect the decision of accepting me or not. I was a complete idiot my freshman year. I slacked off my first semester and was suspended. I was given 5 days of out of school suspension for throwing stinkbombs in the student lobby, because at the time I thought it was funny. I was also very out of shape (235 pounds, could barely finish a mile) After that semester I had what I thought was a low GPA and was number 64 in the class. Ever since then I've been working my butt off trying to act more maturely and get into shape and bring my grades up. I'm enrolled in honors and AP courses, taking my Calculus AB and Physics C examinations this May, received a 4 on my Stat exam last May. I brought my GPA up to a 4.444 currently and am 6/288 in my class. I've also become physically fit, I'm getting a letter in both football and swimming this year, and have lost about 40 pounds since freshman year. One more thing is last may I was at fault in a car accident I received a failure to reduce speed ticket, and I know USNA and ROTC applications ask for all violations of law. Will my suspension and ticket automatically get a red flag on my application, or will the academy look at how my behavior has changed? Thanks.

I don't think shey should affect you, in fact, they MAY EVEN HELP you. The fact that you've changed so much and going to NASS might tell them that you are seroous about a life in the navy, especially if you are pursuing NROTC.

erbium,

Only a nuclear physicist would understand your board name?

If you're doing as well as you say you are, you'll be fine. My roomates during Plebe Summer had both been busted for drug posession early in HS, and there they were. USNA understands that kids make mistakes. A stinkbomb and a car accident is nothing. The improvement over time in school WILL be noticed.

I was recently arrested for harassment in the first degree. My former best friend was heavily into drugs and alcohol and I threatened him that he would be arrested if he did not stop. This successfully got him off both drugs and alcohol. To this day, I'm not sure exactly why I was arrested, but I was. He's the one that broke the law by getting into drugs and alcohol and I'm the one that tried to help him. Even though the charges will be dropped (I have very good attorneys), how bad will that look for the Academy? FBI now has my fingerprints and picture so USNA would undoubtedly notice. With my application, should I tell them straight up exactly what happened?

Also, does involvement in civil suit(s) adversely affect admissions as well? (suing for wrongful prosecution)...

Harassment? WT*?

Trust me...I know. I'm still in the heat of it now. I really got screwed by this kid. I've also spent thousands of dollars in attorney fees. Does the Academy ask about my participation in civil suits (like if I sue for wrongful prosecution and possibly libel [ruining my reputation])?

Gosh, I don't know. I know they do a background check of some kind, but I don't know if it goes that deep.

Have you asked your BGO?

This guy is a LtCol in the Marines and he spoke to my Sea Cadet unit last month, gave me his card, and told me to email him. I haven't heard a work from him since (even after several emails). He's the only BGO that I know and I'm trying to make contact with him. I think my lawyer contacted him for me to ask him about how this would affect a prospective USNA mid (not mentioning my name). But hopefully, after he makes contact with me, I can be open with him. If I tell him about all this, is he obligated to report everything I say to USNA admissions or put it in my file?

Thanks for the replys and info everyone, I had become very worried. Now I just need to work on my push-ups and pull-ups for my CFA this summer so I won't have to retake it.

Kevin

usnso - I know we had to submit background checks from local, county and state. And If you are asking me, YES, level with them. Lay out the facts, let's them know you aren't trying to hide or skirt the issue.

erbium - make the most of SS. My daughter made some lasting connections from her experience last year. Also, your squad leader will give you an evaluattion that goes into your admissions file.

Check out some old posts under the naval academy. There is a ton of good stuff out there. :)

Makes sense...I'm trying to make this look as good as possible and get this as clean off my record as I possibly can.

What am I trying to get here though? Should I take this all the way through court to obtain a "not guilty" or get the charges dropped? And what documentation would I need from the courts to submit to USNA?
