stupid math question

1) <a href="http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/9814/09232011084.jpg%5B/url%5D">http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/9814/09232011084.jpg</a></p>

answer + explanation

7/5=1.4
1.4 x 7= 9.8
Answer 9.8

Reason: the two triangles are similar. The smaller one has a base of 5 and a height of 2. The second one has a base of 7 and a height of x-7. The ratios must be the same.

(x-7)(5) = (2)(7) –> x = 9.8

Alternatively, you can do this: look at only the two smaller squares, and then only the two larger ones. Because they’re ‘the same’ (only scaled up a bit), the side length ratios must be the same. That gives you the same thing.

The easy way or the extended way?

Easy way
You know that the line that just below B is equal to 2 – see 7 minus 5. The ratio of the sides of the first two squares is 5 to 7, or an increase of 40 percent. Apply the same ratio to 2 by multiplying by 1.4 and you have 2.8 for the small line just below C.
Add 7 to 2.8 for the answer 9.8 (or 49/5)

Note that the figure is drawn to scale.

The extended way:

thanks all for your help, i didn’t realize how easy it was
@Xiggi Honestly, man, your name will one day coin a new word that means either make something easier or genius. anyway, thank you.

that either means*
