Does being attractive give you an edge in the business world, for example in the hiring process, making deals/sales etc.? I know this sounds stupid but is it reality? I've heard this rumor quite a few times but never really questioned it so i thought I'd post it and see what you guys think?

There have been some studies published or at least publicized lately supporitng this assertion

really, would you have any idea on where to find these studies? Does this also apply to say a heterosexual male interviewing another male and same with females, or does this only apply to male/female interviews etc.?

i've seen psychology studies doing this too that assert that being attractive or PRESENTABLE gives you an edge in the business world. it doesn't matter if the interviewer is male or female (i think), because they are looking to hire someone that can be presentable to both sexes when they to their business deals and not necessarily someone who they just think is attractive, though i'd think that occassionally, an interviewer may hire someone of the opposite sex who is attractive simply because of that. nevertheless, attractiveness (regardless of gender) may be translated into "confidence" and "ability" during the interview.

i had a seminar last year and one of our guest speakers does cosmetic facial surgery. he says a good number of his clients are those who are looking to get into the business world but felt that they weren't attractive enough. he said his clients felt that it makes a big difference in terms of trust and confidence if they were more attractive.

of course, you dont HAVE to be attractive to succeed in the business world. people point to donald trump as a good example.

WOW! To be honest with, I'm completely blown away that this is such an advantage in the business world.

Same as entertainment..

what do you mean by that?

Two words: sex appeal.

haha I can see that. I can't see it working with 2 straight guys thoough.

I definitely think it does. It's more pleasant to listen to someone who doesn't look like a cow.

That, or be an incredible speaker. You know, the one who gets everyone's attention when (s)he simply says something.

Basically what you're saying is try to make a lasting impression and stand out from the rest, and being attractive would help a great deal in making this easier. I know understand. :)

It's only my observation and in my area, but have you ever noticed how beautiful drug reps are? It's a requirement.

LOL. Do you not know who Bill Gates is????????????:p

You can also stand out from the rest by being really weird :)

LOL. Do you not know who Bill Gates is????????????

Bill Gates is not an ugly person. He's at standards, if not above. He does not choose to dress himself up in a suit, etc to present fashionable Afterall, why does he care? If you took away the glasses and made him wear something besides slacks, you'd find himself much more presentable.

Bill gates has a squeeky voice, but a big heart.

Being attractive gives you CONFIDENCE, which is the deciding factor--not looks. Just be confident, but modest too.

as stupid as this example is, that guy on the apprentice. The fat one that just got fired. He was picked last and was never given a chance. He was/is the only unattractive person on that show. Being overweight isn't the end all but it is the way he carried himself(no pun intended).

i think it goes in this order

confidence
being presentable
being hot

....yes, everyone prefers to work with hot people but in reality, hot people won't necessarily bring in the $, which is what matters most. = )

although i am still in high school lol
