is umich public or private?

lol... public of course

It is obviously public. Why do you even wonder?! LOL

UMich is the most amazing "public ivy".
A world class public university with so many top ranking academic fields that just a handful top privates could match it.

Lol, but for us out of staters... the cost is as good as private haha

haha yeah.. i even applied to Umich and I have yet to hear from them.. the tuition (i'm out of state) made me wonder if it really was private .. hehe

Michigan is expensive for out of staters, and why not? It is better than 99% of private universities...and strill cheaper than most of them!

Michigan's financial "aid" was a slap in the face to me. Just because I live 1 1/2 miles south of an invisible border, I have to pay twice as much to go there, and get absolute cr*p in terms of financial aid.

I used to be a diehard Wolverine--those days are over.

I <3 Dartmouth

I take it Dartmouth gave you a scholarship Chris?

Not as much of one as I'd like--I plan to appeal their decision. But it's a starting point anyway.

Chris, obviously, if you can save money by going to Dartmouth, go for it. As it is, Dartmouth is about $5,000 more expensive than Michigan (and you would have to spend quite a bit of money on plane tickets going back and forth from Toledo to NH), so they would have to offer you $10,000+ for you to claim that you are really going to save money by going to Dartmouth.

However, I am confused because someone who loves Michigan cannot possibly love Dartmouth. They are completely opposite schools.

As much as it sucks man... your tax dollars (income and property) have not fed into Michigan's funding. It is unfair that not all state universities are even... but I think they are justified in doing it the way they do. Although, it would be cool if (if I go to Michigan) they cut my UofI funding and gave it to Michigan to give me in-state tuition. But whatever.. haha this is the way it is.

Question: Right now I'm out of state (California). If I go to Umich nxt year, i'll be paying the out of state fees. If my family moves theres, or if I get my own place there and make it my residence, will my residency status change thus changing my costs?

My family has been thinking about moving to michigan for a long time (relatives there).

hey man, I live in Toledo and yea I'm not too far from michigan border either. It really sucks but I LOVE Michigan so I'm going there anyways. Does anyone know that if my parents buy an apartment in michigan, then the tuition can change in the 2nd yr from out of state to instate?

Alexandre--I do not think Mich and Dartmouth are as opposite as you might think, or if so, this is not a bad thing. I am also strongly considering Case Western, and that is about as opposite from Dartmouth as you can get except for the size and private school status. However, I love each school, not because of their individual characteristics (i.e. research U vs LAC), but how they present them. I could see myself happy at either school, just far happier at Dartmouth.

umardarr: I think you are correct about the tuition change. Unfortunately, with my potentially unstable family situation, I cannot guarantee my parent(s) would be able or willing to move there. What school do you go to? I'm a Whitmerite.

i'm at st johns man lol....my parents would in no way move there, theyre just thinkin they might want to buy an apartment and rent it out to others along with me stayin it in...that way costs lower ya know

buying an apartment does not get you residency status. It takes a lot more than that.....does one of your parents live in MI, or pay income taxes in MI, or are you self-supporting, or over the age of 24......

is it wrong..umm i really like umich..but i chose middlebury..ahh..well umich gave me 23K but then i would have to pay 13k on my own whereas middlebury gave me 37k and thers fed grants too..also work study..in tht end my parents only have to pay 1,750..and well i wont be in debt..and graduating from college without debt would be awesome...what should i do?..what should i choose?

Chris, if you think you would be much happier at Dartmouth, go for it...it is an awesome university...arguably the best in thenation.

SexyDesi, Middlebury is awesome too. If you do not mind a small college in a rural (but GORGEOUS) setting, you cannot do better than Middlebury.

Good luck to both of you. You could not have picked better schools.

ahh..thank you Alexandre!!
