(Stupid question)

I am not very familiar with the college app process, so sorry. When you apply to a college, I noticed you have to state what major your going in, to the specific college. So if one puts in medical major, he has a much less chance of being accepted than someone who puts human ecology major, to the same college?

Really confused?

Depends on the school, but yes, that is the case at many.

Ivy league schools...thats what I am talking about. Wait, if yes, can't you put a major thats not competitive, and once accepted, change it to medical?

thats called backdooring. it happens often, but looked down upon. if u can find a less popular major to choose and express your interest, then u may be able to get in with less qualifying stats. but adcoms are pretty good at seeing through this, so beware

wow....Thats pointless. It really is....

Bummmmmp.............

plus most schools don't have a "medical major," you can major in anything and go to med school. However most pre-med kids either major in bio or chem or um health studies. Put down want you want to do because usually your activities will back it up and prove that you are passionate. if all you have wanted all your life is to be a doctor and you intern and volunteer tons of hours in that field and then write "classics" as you major the adcom is going to be very confused.

For Ivies, "undecided" is perfectly acceptable. They know that most students will change their majors at least once, if not twice, during their college years.

Thanks Chedva for the information.

Also, many students that apply to the Ivies have a record of certian courses and activities that stack up and fit one category. For example, a prospective English major may always take the toughest English classes and participate in Shakespeare contests. A prospective business major may have be in Future Bussiness Leaders of America and already have a small business. I must admit I have considered backdooring but now I don't find it effective and I think it could very likely hurt your chances.
