stupid question

he siad duke, georgetown, emory

well first, i'll admit: prestige means alot to me. not alot of DIII schools have it. Also, i don't think i'd be a real stand out basketball player no matter what college i went to... even D III basketball is really competitive and i'd struggle to make the team, let alone start.

schools i'm interested in (and yes all but maybe one are reaches):

u of michigan, u of florida, UVA, UNC, duke, georgetown, emory, UCSD, and cornell.

how much do the EC's hurt me?

ECs can only help your chances. are you in state for any of those state schools you named?

no. out of state for all of them. The U-mass school system is really sub par in my opinion.

just apply and see what happens

liz, you've been a really big help...

just in case anyone wants to rate my chances at Duke (ED):

(input would be greatly appreciated, but i realize that i'm about the 700th kid who's asked for his chances to be evaluated)

Stats:

EC's
Basketball: 9-12
Cross Country: 10-12
Honors Society- 12
plus two part time jobs

GPA: 3.8 weighted... but good grade trend (3.5 as a frosh, 4.3 as a junior)
Class Rank- 22/209

SAT I Math- 670
SAT I Writing- 750
SAT I Crtical Reading- 790

SAT II Bio (E)- 750
SAT II U.S. History- 790

I want to apply early decision to Duke but I'm also considering Georgetown, Cornell (legacy), UC San Diego, U of florida, U of michigan, UNC, Virginia and Emory.

What do you think of my chances at these schools? Thanks. :)

oh, I was going to say apply to MIT(div III)...but then I saw your math mark

yeah the math could use some improving (i feel confident of at least 720)... but no real interest in MIT

thanks anyways though

i think Duke ED wouldn't be too bad of chances. you also got a good look at Georgetown, UVA, and Emory. the ivy leagues are always hard to get into. the other ones i can't comment on because i don't know enough. if you were in-state, i'd say UCSD is good. but i know that out of state is hard to get into UCs

Duke is as hard as most ivies. Now I remember you BigE. Actually, in my book the DivIII school I mentioned have every bit as much prestige as Duke. I'd at least talk to the coaches. Who cares if you start if it helps you get in? OK shot at Duke with stats, but since your ECs are all sports, I'd see what I could do with those.

Suze, any comments on my other schools besides Duke?

I actually do like hearing your tough/insightful comments

yeah, i definitely did not mean to diss those schools...

my cousin goes to amherst and i know what a top notch school that is

Well, in all honesty, who among as knows just how much ECs count at most schools. We know they do at the ivies and such, but who knows what Gerogetown and Emory want? You have good solid stats for those schools. You'll be my test case of just how much well rounded ECs matter.

Duke and Cornell you have average stats for and slightly low class rank. I give you much better odds at Cornell being a legacy.

Michigan is a solid match along with UNC and Virginia. Don't know enough about the others to comment.

also, will being able to pay the full sticker price at a school help me at all if that school is completely need-blind?

No, it won't.

does anyone know?

oh... alright

Actually, it can help you get off the waitlist at a need blind school.
