So I'm a Junior and choosing courses for next year.
I'm definitely taking:

IB History 2
IB English 2
IB French 6
AP Stat
AP BC Calc
AP Physics C

I was going to possibly take an easy art class or maybe astronomy (easy class) as my final class for next year, but there's one requirement I haven't yet filled. Tech.
It's a stupid requirement and everyone says you don't learn anything. For example, one question they had on their final was "How do you get a toaster out of a sink?" I really don't want to take it so I was going to take it online over the summer, but we met with our guidance counselors today and he's really pushing for me to do it as a class next year.
So what do I do, get it over with this summer or suck it up and take it as a class?

I’m sorry, my school has a tech requirement too and we have the worst teacher ever. He gets too lazy to grade so he just fails everyone.
Anyways, it’s a requirement so you’re forced to do it. I would suggest you take it as a class, you already have a lot of AP classes. Over the Summer, you can always take another AP class if you want another. Anyways, maybe you’ll have a good tech class, you never know.

I say just do it online. We have a requirement that every freshman has to take a class called Orientation and it’s basically useless. You have a four teacher rotation in one semester learning a bunch of useless crap.

Why would you waste your summer taking a dumb class like that? There are many things you could do during that time that are much more productive. I think you should just take it online or during the school year.

Take it online. It’s like the science requirements at my school/state and where you have to take certain sciences or you won’t graduate. Online or during the summer since you won’t enjoy the class.

I say take it online over the summer. You’ll end up spending a lot less time than it would’ve taken you in the actual classroom, plus you’ll get an extra class where you might actually learn.
Although, how do you get a toaster out of a sink??

Take it online. That is the best option. I’m stuck taking my school’s tech ed requirement during my senior year and unfortunately, I don’t have the option of taking it over the summer because they only allow summer credit if the student failed it first. So I have one semester where I could be doing something interesting and worthwhile taken up by a freshman fail class.

If you can take it online in the summer, I’d say do that, especially as it doesn’t seem like too difficult a class.
Actually, why would you assume there was a toaster in your sink? I assume it doesn’t happen too often.

Maybe they say they don’t learn anything because they don’t pay attention, and don’t care. Do you know what to do if the toaster falls in the sink?

Talk to the adults around you - I bet there are plenty of “life skills” that you haven’t learned, that would be of significant benefit. It sounds like this class addresses some of those skills. If it is a graduation requirement, there is a reason behind it. If the class is such a joke, take it and do well, while everyone else fails.

^Even my guidance counselor basically thinks it’s a joke. He told me not to waste my summer taking a dumb class. No one I’ve talked to thinks it’s legit

Definitely take the online option during the summer so that you can do something you want to during the school year. If you’re worried about the GC’s approval, just blame it on your parents. Ex) “My parents are forcing me to take it over the summer because they think it’ll be easier on me.”

On the topic of life skills, I think there’s not much you can learn in a classroom environment like that. You actually need to experience those problems (and their consequences) to understand and remember how to solve them.

The astronomy “class” at my school is a joke sciene. It’s what people take because they need a third credit and don’t wanmt to take something legit
