Stupid School Policies

For those of you who get in trouble for posting stuff about school on xanga, myspace, etc. or even having one, that is illegal... It is possible to sue the school because they are breaking the 1st amendment.
Trust me- it has been done

Every cut gets you a detention after school, and many people are marked cutting by mistake or marked present by a teacher when they were absent, which resulted in having cuts for the rest of the classes for that day. It takes a long time to clear a cut and people serve detention for cuts they don't have.
We always have field trips, athletic games, and special events, so many people end up missing class (legally, of course), and then receiving detentions for them. We usually just go up to the teacher and ask her to sign it off to prove that we didn't cut class.

As a school ambassador and athlete, I would've received about 15 detentions if I were not able to clear any of them at all. It is quite irritating.

Holy crap, my school rocks compared to some of yours. =P

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not legal to have students sign away their constitutional rights against unwarranted search and seizure in a public school. Lockers, I know schools have the power to search since it's school property. However, cars, while parked on school property, are still private property which to search without a warrant is unlawfully entered...
I would thing so, but I honestly have no idea. Irreguardless, the one I signed is not legally binding in any case as I "accidently" forgot to get my parents to sign it and I was not yet 18 at the time ....

They do, however, seem to do a pretty good job of only searching the cars with some sort of cause, yet there is an entire area of the parking lot (identifiable by the rising smoke) were the especially bright spend every morning smoking pot and they never do anything about that.

I hate to be a nut, but irreguardless is not a word. It's merely regardless.

Hm, I find those random searches quite interesting. I go to a private school, and such unwarranted searches of backpacks, lockers, cars, etc. are not allowed unless they are necessary actions.

I just found out today that my school is getting rid of study halls for next year

We've only got study halls for people taking 2+ AP classes, which is fine by me. Last year, though, they let the preAPs take as well. I think we had two instances of people staping themselves to something, one person who made herself pass out ("choking game" or whatever), two people wrap paper towels around their heads for the entire period, and one guy duct tape himself to the wall.

Yaaay, school.

Some students were trying to get open study hall for all honor roll students. The problem that the administration had with that idea is that the average gpa at my hs is a 3.66 unweighted, so basically anyone in a study hall could have come and gone as they pleased. Instead, I guess, they decided to eliminate them altogether, which is kind of a stupid idea when you're on a block schedule.

nope...I'm in DeKalb...the school system with the DUMBEST administration on earth...

oh man i wish we had study halls. We don't have any free period.

Our school requires everyone to have a free period unless the student maintains at least a ~3.7 GPA (in this case, she is free to take a class in replacement of her free block). Those that take college classes can have two free periods.

a school near me put that they can randomly drug test/breathalize anyone who drives to school- they put it in the parking contract.

Wow, I've never heard of a free period being REQUIRED - our school is all, "say no to study hall!" Some of us got lucky this year and got first period free, because the only classes during first period are pre-algebra, algebra one, and algebra two, which we had all taken.

Our school gave us ALL (the entire high and middle school) in school suspension for like, three days, because someone pulled the fire alarm for no reason and didn't confess. (When we were all outside after the fire alarm had been pulled, the principal came out, told us to be quiet, and gave someone suspension for laughing.)

It was actually really, really stupid, because instead of having three days of classes, we had three days of just sitting there in silence, then going home with no homework!

Then, the pranks continued as someone decided to -gasp- brace yourselves: smear lipstick on the carpet. This earned us many, many lectures, and we all got searched before we could enter the school. They confiscated any makeup they found.

They ended up calling the police (at this point, they had a bit of reason - someone had started setting small fires - REALLY small ones.) We were on the local news. We never really found out who did it, but they just rounded up about ten students with iffy alibis, and suspended them.

Yep. And it's been done multiple times, each time the decision referring to the previous cases.

Honestly, all you guys need to do is bring them a copy of previous rulings and threaten to get the ACLU involved if the policy doesn't change. And of course, if they don't change, well, make well on your threat and make a nice phone call :).

Of course, private school is a whole different domain...

Our school doesn't say "required," but if you don't achieve the minimum GPA needed to take an extra class, you're basically stuck with a free period.

Sydney - I remember how a nearby school set a fire on campus. It was pretty big, I guess, considering that it did burn down the school's detention hall...

ooh yeah that random drug testing stuff too. pretty dumb but i dont do drugs, so, w/e

someone set a fire in my school last week, but it wasn't discovered until 5 minutes before school got out, so we had to stand outside in the freezing Ohio cold for like an hour after school until the firemen came to put the fire out.

Haha, we're technically not allowed to wear flipflops and carry cell phones, except everybody does it.

We have four lunches (as in, for 2nd and 3rd lunch, you go to class, go to lunch, and then finish that class)

Last year, debate stuff couldnt even merit going on the announcements.

Even though debate is a class, all our funding has to be written to an account separate from the school.

Suspension--its a reward

class starts at 7

when the TV is broken, you have to call the PTA, not the school board techs.
But what most ***es me off is the complete lack of respect for debate...ugh. The stupid debate policies drove the unbelievable coach to another school, and got us an *advanced, yes advanced, not even honors, english teacher as our coach. Needless to say, she knows NOTHING about debate. UGH.

my lunch schedule is pretty crappy...

lunch is only half an hour (even though classes are like an hour long) and then all lunches occur during one class period. if you have A lunch, then you go to lunch for 30 minutes, then class for an hour. if you have B lunch, then you go to class for 30 minutes then lunch for 30, then class for the final 30 minutes. and if you have c lunch, then you go to class for an hour and then lunch for 30 minutes. and what sucks is that all the seniors have C lunch, so we don't get to eat until like 12:30...
