I had a very stupid reason for not wanting my D to apply to Duke. A girl in D’s 4th grade class was very, very cruel to D, and both of this girl’s parents went to Duke and wore Duke clothing all the time. The mean girl was bright and bragged that she would go to Duke one day, and I was afraid she would get in there and be cruel to my D again. (The girl ended up at a much lower ranked u.) Silly, I know, but honest.

I did not want my D to apply to a school because it is responsible for a series of lousy math books, that are used in many elementary schools.
A friend of mine refused to let her D apply to a school because she thinks any school, that feels the need to add “in St. Louis” to its name, has an identity problem.

Parents won’t let me apply to either of the 2 Hawaii schools I picked because they think they’re filled with racist, squint eye people

^ Now the WUSTL one really IS stupid. She doesn’t think the existence of other universities such as, say, Washington & Lee, Mary Washington, or, most importantly the University of Washington provide enough justification for doing something with your name? What does she think of the UC, SUNY, and UMass systems? The various Wesleyans? And what would she advise poor California University of Pennsylvania and Indiana University of Pennsylvania to do? (I know what I would advise them – change the darn name!)

EDIT: I assume she would apply the same criterion to Columbia University in the City of New York (its official name). Or not?

Vassar post is too funny - for the record, pink has been changed to crimson, out of respect for all the poor boys that are already having to explain why they’re “going to a women’s college.”

Good post, JHS. And add Miami of Ohio to the list.

^ Noooooooo! Crimson? Again? Now I’m glad my kids couldn’t apply there. Pink and grey was much classier.

I do believe that it’s maroon not crimson, that ought to sit better, JHS. And I thought the old color was rose, which sounds so much more refined than “pink.”

Actually its name is just Miami University. People add the “of Ohio” themselves. I wonder, if WUSTL changed its name back to simply Washington University, if people would add the “in St. Louis” themselves. Or would they call it “Washington of Missouri”? :P

I used to say that I would never let my son apply to the school where I got my master’s degree (which I will not name here). Now I’ve come to realize that that was stupid, because it’s actually a great school, and I just happened to have a bad experience.

Actually, the Vassar boys (and girls) still graduate with Vassar’s original colors …

See photo: <a href=“Commencement | Vassar College”>Commencement | Vassar College;

And, they have pink loaner bicycles all over campus!

I don’t know any Lehigh alums who will allow their children to apply to Lafayette.

^^And vice versa.

I wouldn’t let (as in, actively discouraged) my DD from applying to Tulane after seeing a PBS show about what would happen to New Orleans if the pumps failed… She began college in 2004 - so, guess I was right! Didn’t want Dd to apply to Harvard or Yale or Princeton or Duke, due to possibility of reverse discrimination - I mean, if she went there wouldn’t people be reluctant to hire her if she wanted to be a short-order cook or such? Didn’t want DS to apply to Texas A&M because it’s a “scary cult school” per DH - and I thought it was ugggglleeeee, but I did make him apply in spite of that. (just wanted him to have another option available, and he didn’t want to attend any out-of-state schools, so options for big engineering programs were somewhat limited.) He didn’t like it, either.

That’s hilarious. I completely agree, although I’m sure Buckey parents feel the same way about Wolverines.

There are some Spartan parents in our neighborhood who didn’t want their kids to become Wolverines. Now that’s just stupid :)

I resisted Duke because their basketball team is evil.

We reached a compromise: He can apply and even go there, but he can’t cheer for the basketball team.

my parents didnt want me applying to a school because on the tour, all the parents were using “summer” as a verb. we only know it as a noun.

huskem55, that is wonderful! I agree completely! Not only would I not want my kid to go to college with people who “summer”, but I would personally slap them!!!

I didn’t let my son apply to USC because OJ Simpson went there.

Haha, I’m from Ann Arbor, and I can certainly see that happening, though around here, it’s more like the students not wanting to apply to Ohio State because of the rivalry.

I haven’t seen much of that around here, but that’s probably because a lot of kids from my HS went to state schools, and and MSU is the second ranking of the large public universities in Michigan (Grand Valley State U is likely up there as well, but it’s not one of the large state U’s).

I don’t know all of my dad’s views on the schools I considered applying to, but so far as I can tell, there weren’t any schools he didn’t want me to apply to because of stupid reasons.
