I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering and currently have a rather low GPA and it is my fault of course. I have 3 semesters left and I can raise it maybe a tad, but it still would be below a 3.0. I have had two paid internships that I got before my grades dropped. Is it likely that I will still be considered for most entry level positions? Most of them have a 3.0 requirement but the only thing I have going for me is my relevant experience.
I do not know much about Engineering, so I can’t speak to your specific field. However, I do think that with most fields, internship/job experience is a huge deal. If you have support and letters of recommendation from whoever were your supervisors, that will help you out a lot. That being said, your GPA might be a barrier to employment, though to what extent I am not sure. Is there a particular semester that knocked you down? Is there any way to explain the grade issue (family event, personal trauma, medical problems, etc.)? That could help your case. Also, if you have room in your schedule, you can retake some of your lowest classes and replace the grade on your transcript which will bring your GPA up. Alternatively, you can take a few classes in something you are really good at just to boost that overall GPA. Just some food for thought. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
I’m not the expert on this, but I think you can pull up your GPA with 3 more semesters in front of you. You may just need more time studying. It is true your experience is quite relevant but still I think you’ll have a better chance with a higher GPA, not that I have so high GPA but because I think the engineering industry is competitive that way where everything is considered.
