Are there any current students that can comment on the substance free housing? Ive never did any drinking before in high school and I dont plan on doing it in college either. However, I've seen some comments that the sub-free housing is not that social and thats something I dont want. Any suggestions of what I should do?

You’re in the same place as I was. Like you, I heard the same stuff about the subfree floors, and therefore decided on a regular floor. It worked out great - I haven’t been pressured to drink, but have met some awesome floor mates as well.

Hi phillies05, I’m so glad you decided on Washu! I am a freshman and I currently live on a regular floor and I definitely never feel pressured to drink, I think you should also know, however, that some of my best friends live on a sub-free floor and they are some of the most social and nicest people I know. I actually got to know a bunch of them waiting in line at a frat party haha. They go to all the same social events that I do, but just don’t drink. Also, you’re technically allowed to drink; you just can’t bring alcohol onto the floor. There are definitely a few people (mostly guys) who get placed on sub-free floors just because there aren’t enough spaces on the regular floors and everything still works out.

You’ll be happy wherever you pick Also, WashU is a very responsible drinking-friendly environment, so you may change your mind about drinking once you get here. I never drank in high school and I started drinking (mostly casually) when I got here.

Admittedly, it’s not perfectly enforced, but I think WashU is much better about drinking than most other schools are.

Thanks for the advice! As long as there is not a lot of pressure to drink on the regular floors, I think I will go with the regular. One more question though. Do you guys feel you are able to finish all your work in a quiet setting when you want quiet? Thats one thing I liked about sub-free is that they advertised it to be a quiet environment. However, I dont want it to be quiet all the time. So, when you want quiet in your room to get work done, do you find it difficult to find it?

So if you wanted to drink, how easy is it to find a party?

You don’t even need to find a party because the RAs do not care if you drink in your room. But to answer your question, it’s not difficult to find parties on Thursdays or on the weekend.

At least in my floor, there were a couple “party suites” where alcohol was provided for pre gaming, and music was played on Friday and Saturday. Otherwise it’s quiet enough to study.

Are the people who chose sub-free glad that they did?
