Sub-Free Housing

Are there any college students who could offer an opinion on substance-free housing options on campus? I'm considering it, but want to know more about it. Any thoughts/comments would be appriciated :)

its going to vary entirley based on the specific school you go to.

what are you asking? I'd imagine that there would be less drug/alcohol use in these dorms, wouldn't that be the main difference? everything else will vary based on the college.

and bear in mind that living in a substance free dorm doesn't mean that your roommate cannot come back home drunk and disorderly......it just means that the drinking is pushed to another local.

i understand that it will vary completely from school to school, but i was wondering if anyone who has had experience with sub-free housing was willing to give an opinion (regardless of the school).

cannot help you there but many discussions on CC did you do a search for this?

i know uvm has a substance free housing and substance free lifestyle. Lifestyle mean you cant get caught with anything anywhere. There are a lot of substance free housing options on campus

technically, all dorms on my campus are substance free. but there's the 'healthy living' hall with the even more straightlaced kids than normal. it's pretty much the Mormon dorm.

Here at UNH, the substance free dorm is a substance free lifestyle. The way I understand it is that they sign a contract saying that they will not drink/do drugs, etc. If they do, they will be moved to another dorm.
Drinking is allowed in the dorms here, provided that there is only one open container per student 21 or over, and the drinking occurs in the room that belongs to the older student, and not in a room of people under 21, no matter how old the visiting student is, if that makes sense.

At Dartmouth, its great, because you're living with kids who also choose substance free, so even if your roommate can go out and get drunk and stagger back at 3 am, he probably won't. Not to say that kids in subfree dorms have no social lives - I definitely have a lot of fun with my dormmates. And some do go out partying, they just dont want it back at their dorm, which is cool too.

Here they're called "wellness floors" in some of the dorms. Students sign a pledge to remain drug/alcohol/tobacco free on and off campus at all times, and they do alot of activities together as a floor, such as go work out or go to movies together and stuff.

Yeah kinda mormon living, not my thing, but i think its a great program to have on a campus
