June will be the first time that i will be taking the Lit subject test. When I found out that there was poetry and that the subject test would be like an extended Critical Reading (SAT I) I freaked. What books do you recommend to boost my chances to about 150 points?

My SAT sophomore scores were:

CR: 630
M: 590 (I suck at math)
W: 590 (i bombed the essay = 7. ugh. my exam room was bloody hot!)

I took the SAT this May and have no idea how I feel about it; i then took my AP history exam and recently took a practice history sub test which was 640 (frowns).

So, what are the best prep books for Lit?
Math level II, and US history?

For Math Level 2, I hear that Princeton Review's practice tests are accurate, and Barron's are extraordinarily hard. For U.S. History, I recommend the Amsco book. It seems pretty universal.

Now, about Literature. The key to doing well on the Literature Test is practice. Instead of just buying one, I suggest borrowing all of the Literature prep books your library has (not exactly all at once unless you want to scare the librarian:)) and doing all of the review questions and practice tests. A 150-point boost is no small feat, but work diligently and do your best!

Literature is also quite a bit of innate ability, so don't get too frustrated if you don't score as high as you want. 600 is a good score by normal, non-CC standards, anyway.

to be honest, i can't think of a way to study for the Literature portion. the best thing to do is probably familiarize yourself with poetic terms, because when i took it there were a few questions on that for the poems.
it's just difficult to get a good score for the Lit, unless you are good at reading passages "between the lines" and making connections in with the poem portions.

if you are poetically inept, do you still suggest focusing on the poetry. i KNOW that will be my pitfall. also, do they even release lit subject tests? do you have a link or something where i can access old test Q's? seriously, much appreciated thx

Thanks, Lu Jinny and hapaing. I just thought it would look really awkward if I had like a 750-800 on both history and math iic (from maximum prep) and then a 600 on literary given the fact that it will not correlate with my SAT score (I can't be too sure because I only have my sophomore scores to rely on and my May test score isn't out yet).
