Subject Test Question

So, I will mostly likely take Biology and Chemistry my first year of college. I want to have four subject tests on my app because I am applying to some very selective schools as a transfer applicant. This june, I will be taking Math IIC and world history. I could do MIIC in may and add Chem and Bio in June and get decent scores on the all of them, but I am aiming for near perfection on these tests. Would I be better taking the subject tests for Bio and Chem right after my classes first year of college? This would guarantee very good scores on both of them, correct?

You have to remember that subject tests are high school level tests so that means that what you learned in your college classes may not be in your subject tests. You need to get one of those prep books and see what topics are in these subject tests. My personal opinion is for you to take the biology and chemistry subject tests when you know the topics well enough. Maybe you can do Math IIC subject test but its up to your personal choice. As far as I know, the only reason you would do Math IIC subject test if you are applying to MIT. Don’t bother with world history, just don’t worry about it. Remember that you are a transfer student, not someone who is applying as a freshman so these subject tests won’t hold that much weight for transfers. Concentrate more on doing well in your college classes for bio and chemistry.

If the college/university specifically requires subject test scores for all transfer applications, then you need to take the specific number of tests that the place requires. Otherwise, don’t take any subject tests. And certainly don’t waste your energy taking any extra ones!! The SAT Subject Tests are essentially meaningless once you have been in college. Your course grades from your college classes will be what matters.

Yes, I agree. But after getting A’s in these classes, I should just take the subject test when I’m on summer break, because I will have a very good foundation in these classes from the respective college course?

Taking a subject test after getting into your college won’t give you an advantage in college level coursework. You start anew, and FWIW, most students who get A’s in these classes are just as prepared as you.

Why would you want to take a step back, and pay to take high school tests, to prove to yourself that you can take a test?

I am talking about getting an advantage in transfer apps. I would most likely apply as a Junior to selective schools, and 800s on subject tests could help me have a better app.
