Subject Test Scores for Top-Tier Schools

Where should the cutoff be? I'm considering not sending a score for U.S. History if it is below 650 or Math II if it is below 700. Is this a suitable standard to set?

Anything in the 600s = not good for top-tier schools.

700+ is fine… 750+ is even better.

I think once you’re in 750+ range you’re good. Math 2 you might need an 800 though. Just b/c everyone gets that.

You need 800 for everything. Have fun!

No you don’t… that’s almost like asking for a perfect SAT.

Yeah, it’s extremely difficult to get 3 800’s (although several people on CC seem to have done that).

how about an 800 in Math II and a 720 in U.S.?

^if ur not applying to liberal arts schools thats fine

Something tells me Bell Curve was not being serious.

I’d say 700+ for everything besides math 2 which would probably be 750+

I heard 750+…i hope i get 800 on the Math 2, and at least a 770 on the Math 1

I think people put a bit too much emphasis on subject tests. If you’re not applying to an engineering program or declaring yourself a math major, then I couldn’t see <750 Math IIC hurting you that much.

I hope its not too bad since I only studied for these yesterday… but my other test scores will hold me up enough. I think I was 750+ for all anyway, but I could’ve definitely had 800s if I’d studied. Honestly, I don’t think it would be that difficult to get 800s if you just studied a lot. The curves for these tests are much nicer. You can miss 10% or more of the questions and get an 800 on Math II, World History, and U.S. History, so I wouldn’t equate it to a 2400 on the SAT I. I think that 750s a solid score that will make you competitive and 700 is a score that won’t keep you from getting in, but won’t be great for you either.

What about 740 for USH? lol omggg I hope there’s a huge curve… It sucks bc I really do know a lot of Amer. history :(

Are the SAT IIs a big part of admissions? I know that when it comes to your HYPMS-level schools, everything matters, but SAT IIs don’t seem to be hugely emphasized in the admissions process.

Yeah, I think that there is simply an abundance of 800’s on math 2 on CC so its value seems to be deflated. As percyshelley said, if you’re not applying to a difficult engineering program, I do not think anyone at a selective school would scoff at a 750-790 score.

I got 800 on Math IIC
750 on World History
Took USH (prob 720-770), Bio (720-770), and Physics (750-800) today.
Is it the norm to send 3 scores in 3 different subject areas (Math IIC, Physics or Biology, USH) to top tier colleges? Thanks!

What are good scores for UC’s?

UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCD…

700+
10 char
Now how about my question…?

Yes, generally you’ll show that you’re well-rounded by submitting one in math, one in science, and one that’s neither.
