Subject Test

Hi, I am Interested in applying to highly selective schools. If they do not require subject tests and I received a 34 ACT and a 10 on the essay and a 800 on the Biology Subject test but only a 710 on Math 2 Subject Test and 5’s on my AP Tests would it hurt my chances if I do not send in my Math 2 Subject test since it seems that that is a bad score? I want to major in Biology

it wouldn’t hurt you chance if you don’t send in you math SAT subject test score, and they have no knowledge you took it.
Math II 710 is about 50%, do you plan to retake? it is not always the percentile but if you can get to 750-760, it sounds better. For Biology major, if you improve to 750, it wouldn’t hurt to send in the score.

This may or may not be the case. The OP needs to clarify what colleges s/he is targetting. While the college does not “require,” do they “recommend?” If the college “recommends” 2, then I would not send one. Very very few students only take one Subject Test, so an AO may think the an applicant is hiding a second, less desirable, score - which, in fact, s/he is in this instance.

I agree with @skieurope. I suggest trying a couple other Subject tests and retaking Math in Oct. Send your top two over 700. 750+ is better of course, but two over 700 is okay, esp. with your 34 ACT.

Sending one doesn’t look good and recommended = required for most students.

Btw, my D had similar ACT score and she couldn’t get her Math 2 Subject test up over 700 despite two tries. She’s bio major and sent in Bio, Spanish, and US History SAT II subject tests, all in 720 to 760 range if I recall. I don’t know that they helped, but probably checked a box more or less.

You will be able to self report your AP test scores on the common app.

Good luck!

If applying to Georgetown, it recommends three subject tests and if you do not submit three it requires you to explain in your application why you are not submitting three tests, and I assume saying you did not want to send a low scoring test is not going to be considered a favorable explanation. Then you have a number of high ranked colleges that recommend but do not require two subject tests but many of those actually did require tests only a few years ago. Some of those make statements on their sites, such as Harvard and Carnegie Mellon, that suggest the recommend rather than require rule now exists because they do not want to disadvantage those who may not be able to afford taking and sending subject tests. Though you can still not submit two, you should assume you are better off sending two to those colleges unless you can show in your personal statement that you are poor. Other high ranks that recommend two state, like Yale, that the failure to submit two tests will not be a factor considered against you; however, it does not state it will be a factor considered in your favor, and you have the issue that most applicants will submit them and thus you will be competing with a large number of applicants who have submitted two subject tests.

In any event, if you do not retake, you should still send the 710 to those colleges because it is actuall;y a good score, i.e., it may help and will not hurt.

Thank you
