JHU is my first choice school, and I am applying regular decision.
I took the ACT and got a decent score. However, I read the site and it said that it's "strongly encouraged" that I submit some SAT II's

I want to be an English major - What is an acceptable SAT II score for JHU? If I have to, I think I will take Literature and Math 1.

HOWEVER, I also took the AP English Language test last year and got a 5. If JHU sees that, is that enough to reflect my current english skills? Or will I still have to submit my SAT Lit if I take it?

I don't want to get a lower score on the SAT II and then submit that if I already proved my abilities with a 5 on the AP test. And I don't want to submit a poor math score if I'm not going to major in math, and it will only bring my application's worth down.

Maybe I'm being a pessimist and I should see what happens when I take these tests, but can someone please clear up my confusion?

I guess basically, I'd like to know what a good SAT II score is, should I take them even though I have an AP score, and should I take them since I took the ACT?

Last year, I was in a very similar situation. I also applied RD as an English major and submitted the ACT. However, I also submitted 3 SAT II tests: Literature, Math II, and US History.

I would encourage you to take the tests and see how you do - if you don’t score well, then you don’t have to submit them.

And, as the Hopkins admissions site mentions, the subject tests are not required, so if you do not submit any, it will not negatively affect your application.

What would you consider to be a “good score”? I got mine back today -
Math I 660
Math II 660
and Lit 630

I know that my lit is low - but should I still submit it? I’m wondering if it’s enough if they see that I got a 5 on my AP English Language Test. What’ your opinion?

I know a lot of kids consider 700 to be a minimum, but would it bring me down if I send these scores? Thanks :)

Those scores are good in the nature of the test. However, for Hopkins’ standards, 700+ would have been ideal. If you can, retake them, if not, no biggie because they’re not even required, regardless of ACT or SAT.

JHU’s ranges are 31-34 for the ACT ([Johns Hopkins University Office of Undergraduate Admissions - Fast Facts - Hopkins by the Numbers](http://apply.jhu.edu/facts/facts.html)) so you’re in the ranges. That being said, it can’t hurt to take it again and improve that score. But honestly, if you are accepted/rejected, it won’t hang on your scores, so do your best but don’t go crazy over the scores.

Yeah…test scores don’t matter quite as much as everyone makes them out to be! haha
I submitted no subject tests…only took the ACT…and I didn’t even make a great score on it; not bad, but not within the range believe it or not haha
I had other strengths…I got in
Just be well rounded; there is no guarantee for any person to get accepted!

Thanks Dillon and Anouchi! I’d say I have a strong list of service and leadership, so I’ll just stick with my 32 ACT - I have too many other things to get ready before January
And I won’t submit my subject tests because they are low.
Thanks for all the help! I feel more confident that I have a chance of getting accepted!
