For schools that don't require or recommend subject tests, is it worth sending the scores if I have them? I'm asking this question specifically about UMD, where I'm hoping to be accepted into the honors program. Will the subject tests be ignored, or could they still help or hurt my application? If I send the scores, I won't be able to see them until it is too late to cancel.

If your subject scores are high, then I would definitely self-report them even if the school doesn’t require or recommend them and I would pay to send them for a school where you want to get into the honors program. If you do not know what the scores are yet (meaning you haven’t taken them yet, then NO, do not order them ahead of time if they are not required. You might bomb them and they could hurt you.

If the rest of your application is strong and the school doesn’t even recommend subject tests, don’t send them, especially if you don’t even know your scores yet. My daughter was accepted to honors programs and received full tuition scholarships without taking SAT subject tests. She had opted not to apply to any schools that required them, her grades and other scores were strong, and we were paying for a ridiculous number of College Board tests already. Enough is enough!

If the school requires or recommends the subject tests, then by all means send the scores.

If you have great scores and you are sending SAT1 anyway, I don’t the reason for not sending it. Besides admission, SAT2 scores may be considered for placement and merit aids at some schools.

You may want to check to see if the subject tests are even looked at by the particular school for either admissions or placement into courses.
