Subject tests recommended but not required

need some input for a friend of mine who is doing the college search..
if subject tests are recommended but not required, should the student take subjects test.

Does it help for admission, or could it hurt if the scores are not great...

Time is running short and i want to try and help as much as i can as i remember how challenging it was for us.

All comments greatly appreciated.

Tell the friend to take the subject tests. But, then don’t send the results to schools until the friend can see the scores and evaluate them as to whether they will be helpful.

If schools recommend SATIIs, they want them. I think your friend should definitely take them seriously with lots of prep.

If he/she scores high on them send them to colleges; the scores are going to help the application.

If he/she scores low, the scores won’t hurt your application.

It is usually to your advantage to take IIs if the school recommends them. Usually they will consider the IIs only if they help you (Stanford is one of those) and thus not hold bad ones against you (which you shouldn’t even send anyway).
