Subject tests required for engineering?

Most colleges I've seen have said that to apply to the engineering school you need a math and a science SAT subject test, but Penn specifically says math and physics. I got an 800 on chemistry last year... do I really have to take physics now? Or is applying with chemistry fine?

I applied with chemistry and it was fine. But I never saw anywhere that said it had to be physics, so maybe it changed?

They said it when I visited last week and I thought it was a mistake but the website says, “Candidates to the School of Engineering and Applied Science are strongly encouraged to take both a Mathematics and Physics Subject Test.”

Hopefully if I disobey their strong encouragement they won’t be too upset.

Engineering is nearly all physics… the requirement they have is half in your own interest, especially since for Penn you apply to the school of engineering. To get out, you don’t just switch majors - you have to change schools

If they say take Physics, I would just take it. Also I heard that the Math II Test mega hard.

The website encourages candidates to take physics but does not require it. If you take chemistry, I believe it will be fine as well

I would love to do the physics one, but seeing as I just found out this week that I should take it, and my class hasn’t covered all of the material, I don’t think I’ll have time to study enough to do reasonably well. Oh well, we’ll see. There’s an admissions officer coming to my school this month, so I can ask then and take it in October if need be.

And yes, I know engineering is largely physics, which is why I am taking AP physics next year. That said, I’ll be doing computer science which is much less physics-intensive.

I applied to SEAS this year and got in with a 800 Math II, a 770 Bio-E, and a 800 US History. Show that you have done well in whatever physics you have done and tell them that you are planning to take AP Physics/are in that course right now, and you should be fine.
