Harvard requires 3 subject tests...

However, does it look more impressive to take more than 3 and do well on all of them? Or does it look bad?

I'd say if you do very well on all of them, of course it wouldn't hurt.

But does it look impressive?

Not any more than doing 3 and acing them all, it can be superfluous to do more than necessary. personally the people I know that got in took only 3 and did fine.

To me, it depends. It'd either be impressive, or ridiculous. It'll either look like "wow, they're smart" or something like that. ORRR.. they might be like "why did they bother taking all these tests [even though they did well] when they only needed three?"

I think they'll only consider the three with the highest score.
So if you already have 3 subject test with perfect/near perfect scores, I don't think taking more than 3 is of any advantage or disadvantage.

No, it makes you look like a grade grubbing perfectionist with nothing better to do on a Saturday morning.

Well put, mathmom.

I don't think that it would make a difference significant enough to cost you that much money.

Don't OD...although I'm not one to talk, taking bio, chem, and physics SAT II's....

It can help, lets say you take US History and World History, Math IC and Math IIC, Biology and Chemistry.

You can choose the best one from each category. Who knows, maybe 3 SAT II scores with 800s rather than having a 770, 780, and a 790 make a big difference :P

If you are positioning yourself to enter H based on your academic
lopsidedness 800's in 5 SAT IIs will help you (make one the language
with listening).

Otherwise, you might want to rethink the implication of having that
amount of time on hand used to take exams.

If you are asian it might be a good idea to limit your SAT IIs to 3 to
avoid a sterotypical image?

Just get 3 >700 scores and move on.

4 would be enough. Well, if you are sure you could really do well on all of them, take 5. I'd be impressed by 8 800's. Those 8's look great.

I'm pretty sure that Harvard adcoms will think that you were just being ridiculous. Its like taking the SAT again after you got a 780/790/800 just so that you would get all 800's. They don't want the SAT to be one of your extracurriculars. Spend your time focusing on some EC instead.

No more than four. For instance, math 2 + am hist + chem + Spanish is a good line up, because its math, science, history, language. But adding, say, world history or physics would be unneccesary and potentially bad, because it looks like your trying to brute force your way in and the only way u know how is by SATing.

what if I got a lowish score on my math SAT (650) and will be taking USH, Spanish and Lit (I'm humanities oriented) For specific reasons that my gc will be mentioning, I CANNOT take any science SAT II's. And I cannot retake the SAT.....for the 4th time!!!

Should I use a 4th subject test, Math IC, to show that I CAN do some math?

^ yeah you could do that...or you could take Math IIc. I recommend math IIc for two reasons 1) it looks way better 2) the curve is way better.
math I is much easier but DUDE the curve is HORRIBLE. just one question wrong and drop down to like a 750 or something like that. especially since you can study now over the summer, its WAY better to take math II.
