Subject Tests

Okay, so I know Northwestern does not require subject tests (during an info session I went to, the admissions officer breezily said that), but it does say on the website that three are recommended. So, what does that mean? I have a 700 on Math II and 770 on USH. Should I retake Math II to get a higher one and take another one? I just don't understand how much weight is placed on something that is not required.

If it is recommended, then you should definitely take it.
Whenever college admission states that something is “recommended,” it automatically means “required” to any one who wants to get in.

Well not really required per se but if recommended, youre best off doing it.

But for the record, I only took 2 subject tests, USH and Math 2, and got in.

My friend didn’t take any and she got in.

I think you’ll be fine with the two you have.

i didn’t take a single SAT II, and I got in just fine. When they say “recommended,” believe it or not, they actually mean recommended. Not having them does nothing to hurt your chances of getting in, having them just boosts those chances.

Hey thanks for the help you all. I really hate being such a worry wart, but I just need to calm my nerves. Ugh college admissions is terrible. But if anyone else who has gotten into Northwestern, could you all tell me just the basic idea of grades and such, especially if you did not have any subject tests?

yeah, no problem. i had 32 ACT, 4.2 W gpa, ranked 7th in my class of 357, one good rec, one bad one, decent essays, and a total of 9 AP’s by graduation.

I did not take any SAT II Tests and I got in. They can help enhance your application if certain parts are lacking (ECs, GPA, etc). I had a 4.0 UW GPA, 33 ACT, 1st out of 100ish, good recs, so-so esssays (I have a hard time judging my own essays), and took all the APs my school offered (actually a low number).

The friend of mine that got in had a 33 ACT, president of Honor Society, VP of Spanish Club, Dance Team, etc. =] She was also valedictorian.

i got in this year. scores were not so good, but somehow made it work. NU was my top choice btw.

i believe this is what i had:
SAT II: 700 bio, 690 us history
SAT I: 710 writing, 690 cr, 690 math
top 3-5% of class (out of 650-700ish)
3.8 unweighted, 4.2 weighted
took a total of 11 APs throughout HS
Wrote good essays: i think my common app one was particularly strong, and then my Why NU showed a obviously huge interest in northwestern, particularly film/tv.

If you want to know stats of those accepted, use the stats profiles on the sidebars; I found them to be very useful.
