Subject Tests?

Are SAT Subject Tests required for admission into Duke?

They are if you plan to submit SAT scores. If you submit ACT scores, they are optional.

alright i’m submitting my ACT’s since that’s all i’ve taken. i will be taking 3 SAT IIs in october, do you suggest i send them? (i got a 35 on my act)

Since you’ve already got a great ACT score, don’t take the SAT IIs unless you need them to pad your application (i.e. demonstrate competency in math/science if you’re in Pratt).

Or if you’re certain you’ll 800 them all, I suppose.

well i’m not certain i’d 800 them all, i’m actually a little worried since i last took bio and ushistory (two of 3 tests im taking) last school year and i’ve had a whole summer to forget everything.

so do you think i should just take them (i’m already signed up and paid), and send them to places who might be turned off if i get low scores?

stressing out…

Well, if I understand it correctly (and mind you, it’s been a while since I’ve done SATs), you have several choices:

1) Take those tests and void them if you didn’t think you did well.

2) Take those tests, and use Score Choice to only send the ones that you like (mind you some schools will not like that)

3) Not take those tests and either cancel or take some other tests

Yeah, at this point, none of those options are particularly bad and none will hurt you at all. So no reason to stress.

ok i think i’ll just take them and void them if i do poorly. but if i did get like a 600 (ouch), would a high-level school like duke feel more strongly about rejecting me even though i did so well on the act?

Well you void them BEFORE you learn about your score. You can’t void your scores after you get the score.

Which school are you applying to? If you are going to Trinity you don’t even have to bother sending in your SAT II. Pratt you might want to.

ok i didnt know that.

i’m planning on applying to wisconsin-madison, duke, stanford, northwestern, and i dont really know after that

IIRC stanford doesn’t want you to use score choice. So that restricts your options a little.

Yeah SBR is right.

cvickst: sorry I meant which school within Duke are you applying to (Trinity or Pratt)?

oh ok i misunderstood. i’ll be applying to trinity

Oh then you really don’t have to worry about SAT II. Though if you want to go to Stanford, yeah you might want to study and do well on them.

ok great thanks for the help. so i need to decide where to send my scores since i get 4 free. i guess i won’t send them to duke then since it could really only hurt me
