Subject to Academic Dismissal!

hey everyone!

i hope you all did good this past quarter! unfortunately, I Didn't! at all! i am subject to dismissal, what next? p.s. if i were to want to go to community college and then get accepted somewhere else, can i do that? (i'm a 2nd yr)

It really depends on the circumstances. Is this your first time being placed on subject to dismissal status? How many consecutive quarters have you been on academic probation? What’s your Fall 2012 GPA and cumulative GPA?

But, if you do end up going to a community college and you do well, it is possible to be accepted at UCR again or somewhere else.

Talk to your counselor immediately. You may be able to be placed on probation instead if you have extenuating circumstances.

Did you meet both conditions to subject yourself to dismissal?
-get lower than 1.5 for the term
-were already on probation and still failed to get an overall GPA of 2.0

Unfortunately, the non-top UCs actually have stricter policies on dismissal than Berkeley or UCLA, particularly the no term lower than 1.5 rule.

@bubblesforsale: what do you mean extenuating circumstances? like work or something?

@42327119: IF i do end up going to cc, can the units i currently have transfer?

Yes, the units you have where you have a passing grade will transfer. check out assist.org to see transfer requirements (if you are in California)

@crizello: thanks!

Here is my experience with S.T.D (weird way to call it but that method seems to be preferred by people on this forum a few years ago):

I have been placed under std for 2 quarters (winter and spring 2012). Here were my circumstances
-Ds through out all of my courses for both quarters (one F), so i was placed under std
-cummulative GPA was still okay because I was around the 3.5 mark before all of this
-I was in CNAS

So, apparently, passing summer session does not give you a clear for the std status on the campus wide system because it is not considered a quarter. However, if you are cnas, they do give you a clear for the quarter if you passed summer session. Personally, I got out of the std status by just passing all my classes with good grade (required to be a minimum of a C). Through out all of this, I suggest you to talk with your academic adviser a lot, because they will help you avoid a lot of the small details that you might missed.

As for transferring as a 2nd year, I suggest no. Reason being is that you have too much unit. Some school (such as UCR) has a maximum unit cap for graduation, meaning if you pass such cap, you cannot receive a bachelor degree (unless you are barely at the cap with GOOD reasons). Also a lot of school don’t accept later year transfer students, so after a year at CC, your transferring choices lowers by quite a bit

@haha438: thanks for your reply! and i’m in chass, so i don’t know if it works the same way? i was in academic probation on spring qtr of last yr, and i did not do good last qtr either so i was automatically placed in std :(

@eri27s: well considering this has already lasted for 2 quarters, you MUST do well in the 3rd quarter (winter quarter), or else there will be a fairly decent chance you will be removed. I’d suggest take classes that you can manage so that you won’t fail anymore courses. And also, keep your focus on study this time if you are serious about staying in school

@haha438: i have never failed any course, i got 3 d’s last quarter unfortunately :frowning: do i need to get straight a’s next quarter?? p.s. i’m only taking 12 units next quarter :(

and also, God forbid i do get dismissed *knock on wood, do i get sent to the extension center? how do stuff work there? is it like cc or what? thanks

@eri27s: straight As is not required, but it would be nice. Personally, I got an A, an A- and a B+ and was considered cleared for the academic probation/STD. As for how extension works, I am pretty much clueless since I haven’t gotten to that point knock on wood.

Just make sure your grade is all C or above then you should be fine (at least this was part of the contract I received from cnas)

Hey. I hope I can jump in here. I’m a transfer student and I’m a junior. My first quarter fall 2012 I was out in S.T.D. And I’m following the terms so I wont be dismissed after winter quarter and I know my grades aren’t bad but one of the the terms was to et a 2.33 for the quarter. I met with my counselor and she said if I don’t get all A’s their kicking me out. That info is completely different than everything I’ve been told so far, I’m wondering if I’m still going to be dismissed for not getting A’s. my grades are better than the C-, D and F I got last semester. Their around C’s right now maybe a B in one, with those grades isn’t thy hitting over a 2.33 and adhering to my terms to not be dismissed?

By he was I’m as Soc major and in CHASS if that helps. Academic Advisor. Terry DeAnda

He’s just trying to motivate you. Trust the website, not the adviser.

Read what the website says carefully.

I read it online and I also have an email outlining the terms

@Larriaga

I know who Terry is, and I really don’t like her, so I wouldn’t go by what she says. I feel like she tries to make students’ lives more difficult (Monica is a much better Soc. advisor). But yeah, just listen to the actual terms on the chass website. No normal person would expect you to get a 4.0 after being on STD. Good luck with finals though and get that 2.33 :)

I am also going to add that I’m writing based off personal experiences.

Thank You so much. Yeah I don’t like her either, she’s very rude and Monica is very nice. It sucks she can’t be my advisor. I’m going for the 2.33 and higher. We got two weeks left so we’ll see.

I was placed in STD after my first quarter at UCR, I have a GPA of.833 and need to have a cumulative 2.0 by the end of winter quarter…Can someone help me figure out what grades i need?
