Subject to Academic Disqualification...

Hello,

I would really appreciate anyone's constructive input on my situation.

I have been subject to academic disqualification before, but was allowed to continue at UCSD. I was able to raise my cumulative and term gpa and get back into good standing. However this past quarter my term GPA was poor and I am subject to disqualification again. My cumulative GPA is still above 2.0. Is there any chance I will be allowed to stay at UCSD?

Thank you for your time.

For those who are in a similar situation as I was and would like to know what happened to me:

TL;DR:
UCSD is allowing me to stay registered “despite strong reservations” for one quarter during which I must raise my cumulative and term gpa to at least a 2.0. In the academic notice they sent to me on Jan 2 @ 2:40pm, they recommended a lot of things such as making an appointment with my advisor, taking only 12-15 credits, and making sure to make at least 36 units of credits in 3 consecutive quarters.

LONG STORY:
Academic Advising opened on Jan 2 after the break to review student academic statuses.
I called that morning to ask for an appointment to explain my situation to an advisor directly. I learned that advisors will not grant a personal session when they first open in order to be fair to all students so that they can concentrate on reviewing all academic statuses. Usually wait times extend into the 2nd week of the quarter. However, they did note on my contact record that I had called regarding my status. It was implied that my attempt would look positive.
Even though I hadn’t received word if I was disqualified or not, I basically prepared a letter of appeal that day and sent it through the VAC as well as through their office fax.
In my letter of appeal, I addressed reasons for my poor performance (personal and family troubles) and a very detailed plan of action of how I planned to improve. I got a quick reply back from the VAC which basically said to anticipate an academic notice and prepare to follow directions.

Thank you so much to those who sent me private messages about their experiences. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me through this forum I’d be more than happy to help in any way I can.

Hi Banbury,

I’m in the same exact situation you were in. Doesn’t feel good. I just contacted the provost because I read that it was he who would be reviewing my files along with a committee. Seeing as he is probably really busy, do you think I should alert my college advisors that I will be below a 1.5 again this quarter (2nd time. 1st time was a year ago)? I’m worried that would set off red flags for the advisors and possibly be counterintuitive, but I don’t know. My overall gpa is above 2.0 and I only need about 5-6 more classes to graduate. Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

Also, I vaguely remember being withheld financial aid the first time I was subject to disqualification. How was the financial aid situation with you?

Hey lcmj11,

I don’t think you need to call them to alert them because through the system, they will find out. But I do suggest contacting the office in multiple ways to show how serious you are about getting back on track (VAC, phone call, fax). I think you’ll be ok since it’s your second time but just to clarify, both term and cumulative need to be at or above 2.0 in order to be in good standing, not a 1.5.

I’m not sure, but you may be with held financial aid because you do need 36 units towards completion a year to qualify for aid. Failed and repeated classes don’t count towards completion.

Good luck, hope things turn around! Please let me know if you have more questions, I’d be more than happy to help.
