My Dad says he doesn't have anything ready. He said if he tried he could probably get everything except the investment paperwork so even then he won't be able to complete them by February 15th... I have numerous schools with this deadline for the 2012 federal tax returns. Was completing the FASFA and CSS Profile a complete waste of time then? Is there anything I can do?

It is not a deadline for the tax returns, it is a deadline for FAFSA. You complete it with the best estimates available, and then update it once the tax return can be filed. Many of us don’t have the investment paperwork, but he should be able to use his December statements to estimate. Statements are going out from many places, so while Feb 1 might be tight, there’s a good chance he will have what he needs by the 15th anyway. It just means he has to make the time to file his taxes, rather than waiting around until April, which may be his usual pattern.

My son has one school that has a 2/15 deadline for CSS and IDOC (2012 tax returns and W2s). In past years, they said that if they didn’t get the actual return by that date, they could only give an estimate in the acceptance package which is subject to change. I doubt that all is lost, but if he really can’t get them done in time, you should see what it means for that particular school.

Thank you for responses. He said he’ll be calling each school as well.

whatever you do about submitting the 2012 tax forms and W2s, be sure to apply on line with the estimated values before the deadline.
